Chapter 5 - THE CUSTODY PETITION
The petition had been prepared before the barbecue.
It accused me of aggression, instability, and exposing Dany to emotional danger.
Chelsea’s ketchup-covered dress was meant to become evidence.
The laughing relatives were witnesses.
Margaret planned to argue that Dany needed a stable guardian.
Chelsea.
If Chelsea gained temporary custody, she could act on Dany’s trust interests.
That would let Margaret negotiate away his inheritance before the corrected birth records became public.
The fries were bait.
My anger became their evidence.
But the camera captured the entire sequence.
Margaret taking the plate.
Dany stumbling.
The laughter.
Chelsea pointing at his face.
My warning.
The plate.
Context destroyed their story.
Then Evelyn found an emergency hearing scheduled for Monday.
Judge Robert Hale.
A longtime Parker family friend.
We filed the footage before Margaret could present the edited version.
The hearing was moved to an independent judge.
Margaret lost control of the timeline.
Then Dany told me something I had not known.
“Grandma made me say sorry to Carter before you came.”
“For what?”
“For being Grandpa Nathan’s boy.”
My heart stopped.
“When?”
“At the barbecue. She took me behind the garage.”
He said Jason was there.
Jason photographed him crying.
The custody petition included that photograph as proof Dany feared me.
They had manufactured his distress, then assigned it to me.
Evelyn immediately contacted police.
Jason’s office was empty.
His computer had been wiped.
But one printed note remained.
REMEMBER THE LAKE HOUSE.
Nathan and I had spent our honeymoon at the Parker lake house.
The same place he proposed.
The same place Margaret refused to visit.
I took the brass key.
It fit the rear door.
Inside, we found a nursery.
Two cribs.
One labeled CHELSEA.
One labeled LUCY.
The room had been preserved for thirty-two years.
Then a floorboard moved beneath Dany’s foot.
Inside was Elena Ward’s diary.
The final entry read:
May you like
Margaret says she will raise both girls, but I heard Father discussing the trust. If I die, Lucy must never be left alone with her.
