Chapter 12 - MARCUS HALE

The first active continuity subject was not Elena Carter.
It was Marcus Hale.
The sergeant who humiliated me was himself a replacement.
The original Marcus died during training twenty years earlier.
Voss recruited another soldier and gave him the name.
Every promotion, marriage, and service record afterward belonged to a constructed identity.
Marcus had spent his life enforcing the same system that trapped him.
He knew.
He believed obedience would make his identity permanent.
That explained his desperation.
It did not excuse the kick, the threats, or the attempted shooting.
Marcus testified against Voss.
He received no immunity.
Then the archive showed Specialist Dylan Cross had a continuity duplicate too.
Dylan stared at the screen.
Another man used his badge number in Europe.
The investigator had been investigated.
No one stood outside the system.
Then Voss released edited footage showing Elena shooting Marcus on the underground range.
The real video proved the rifle fired automatically.
Public confusion spread.
