Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN BEHIND THE TARGET

My mother, Sarah Carter, disappeared when I was six.
Ryan and I were told she died in a highway accident.
She had entered witness protection after discovering Samuel’s death was staged.
Voss captured her years later.
He used her as leverage against Ryan.
Now he positioned her behind ballistic glass, hoping I would fire at the target mechanism and complete the profile.
Sarah shouted:
“Don’t shoot the glass!”
The chamber walls carried ricochet channels.
Any bullet would redirect toward her.
Dylan found the mechanical release.
Aaron crawled beneath the lane to reach it.
Marcus appeared on an overhead walkway.
He held the remote trigger.
“You think you’re disciplined,” he said. “You’re only afraid.”
I looked at him.
“No. I check where the bullet goes.”
Aaron released Sarah’s restraints.
Marcus pressed the remote.
The chamber rifle fired automatically.
Dylan pushed Sarah down.
The round struck the ricochet plate and returned toward Marcus.
He escaped by inches.
The system had nearly killed its own operator.
Then Sarah revealed Colonel Voss’s final location.
Fort Ashbury.
