Chapter 4 - DYLAN’S ORDERS

Dylan Cross was not assigned to the range as an ordinary specialist.

He worked for Army Criminal Investigation Command under temporary cover.

His mission was to observe unauthorized ammunition transfers.

He had tracked the black-sealed rounds to Marcus’s unit.

He suspected corruption.

He did not know Ryan was alive.

Dylan recorded the entire confrontation through a button camera.

Marcus kicking the rifle.

The insults.

The altered scope.

The command to fire outside the lane.

The evidence mattered.

But the range tower controlled communications.

We needed an independent signal.

Aaron volunteered his civilian phone.

Marcus had mocked him for carrying it.

Now it was the only device outside the military network.

We transmitted Dylan’s footage through a weak desert connection.

The upload reached twelve percent.

Then every range jammer activated.

The signal died.

Ryan said there was another route.

An abandoned observation bunker beneath Target Seven.

The original analog line might still reach Fort Grant.

We moved toward it while Marcus shouted that I was kidnapping a military prisoner.

The absurdity almost made Aaron laugh again.

Then Marcus drew his sidearm.

Dylan aimed at him.

No one fired.

Marcus whispered:

“You don’t understand what happens if Voss loses control of Elena.”

Ryan answered:

“He kills everyone whose profile she can expose.”

A hidden door opened beneath Target Seven.

Inside waited another rifle.

The serial number belonged to me.

It had been registered two years before I entered the Army.
