Chapter 8 - THE FIRING PIN

The firing pin fit the manual release slot because the bunker had been designed by shooters.
Voss assumed every trapped subject would focus on the target.
The real exit was hidden inside the weapon.
We opened the vent and reached the service tunnel.
Ryan called the choice “the shot I didn’t take.”
That phrase unlocked a file on the bunker terminal.
My father had built part of the original system.
Colonel Samuel Carter.
Officially killed before I was born.
He designed continuity profiles to protect covert officers whose identities were exposed.
Then Voss turned protection into replacement.
My father tried to shut it down.
His death created the first Carter profile transfer.
Ryan and I had been recruited because the program already owned our family records.
Then a final message from Samuel appeared.
ELENA, NEVER TRUST THE TARGET THEY REVEAL.
At that moment, the tunnel opened onto an underground firing chamber.
At the far end stood our mother.
Alive.
