Chapter 3 - THE BROTHER WHO SURVIVED

The explosion destroyed the remote relay truck, not Ryan.

He had kicked a fuel can beneath it before the guards noticed.

The blast threw them aside.

Dylan and I crossed the berm under smoke cover.

Aaron remained at the firing line with the soldiers who finally understood this was not training.

Marcus tried to run toward the tower.

Aaron blocked him.

For the first time, the private who laughed chose not to follow the strongest voice.

Ryan could barely stand.

I cut his restraints.

He looked at me once and said:

“You weren’t supposed to come here.”

“That’s your first sentence?”

“If they get your biometric shot, they can finish the system.”

“What system?”

He pointed toward the black-sealed cartridge.

“Every altered round collects grip pressure, breathing rhythm, recoil response, and corrective instinct.”

A shooter’s nervous system became a signature.

The Army could authenticate who fired.

The covert program could also imitate them.

Ryan had discovered it.

Colonel Voss staged his death and used his profile in classified operations.

Ryan escaped once.

Marcus recaptured him.

The range test was designed to see whether I could replace Ryan after he became resistant to conditioning.

Then Ryan showed me a scar behind his ear.

A tracking implant.

Still active.

The tower already knew our position.
