Chapter 12 - MARGARET LOST THE FAMILY SHE WAS TRYING TO PROTECT
Margaret’s greatest fear had always been family collapse.
Her choices created it.
Daniel stopped visiting.
Vanessa stopped speaking to her for months after learning Margaret had manipulated her suspicions.
Richard moved into a separate bedroom, then eventually a separate apartment.
Their marriage did not survive.
Not because of an affair.
Because Richard admitted he no longer trusted the moral logic they had built together.
He told Margaret:
“We protected the family name by lying to the family.”
Margaret argued they had protected Daniel from pain.
Richard answered:
“We protected ourselves from consequences.”
That ended the conversation.
They separated after forty-two years of marriage.
The legal process was ordinary.
Property division.
Retirement accounts.
Residence decisions.
No revenge.
No one lost everything.
Margaret entered therapy.
Again, attendance was not redemption.
Her first letters to Daniel were terrible.
I did it because I loved you.
Richard was trying to help.
Claire would have left.
We returned them through counsel.
Months later, another letter came.
Short.
I believed blood made family legitimate because I was terrified of anything I could not control.
I used that belief to hurt Claire and Lily.
There is no defense for that.
Daniel kept it.
