Chapter 13 - VANESSA APOLOGIZED TO LILY

Two years passed before we allowed the conversation.

Lily was nine.

She remembered the dinner.

Especially the word bastard.

We had never repeated it.

She did.

Children remember the words adults wish they could erase.

Vanessa had completed therapy.

Settled the civil privacy claim.

Agreed to reimburse legal costs connected to the unauthorized first test.

More importantly, she had respected no-contact boundaries for nearly two years.

Lily asked:

“Can Aunt Vanessa tell me why she said it?”

We arranged a therapist-supervised meeting.

Vanessa looked nervous.

Good.

Lily asked directly:

“Why did you call me that?”

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“Because I was angry at your mom and wanted to hurt her.”

“Why me?”

“Because I knew hurting you would hurt her more.”

Lily stared.

“That’s really mean.”

“Yes.”

“Did you think Dad wasn’t my dad?”

“I thought your DNA meant something different than it actually meant.”

“Does DNA say he’s not?”

Vanessa hesitated.

The therapist let her answer.

“DNA says your biological connection is unusual. It doesn’t say who raised you.”

Lily looked toward Daniel through the observation window.

Then back.

“Dad’s Dad.”

“Yes.”

Vanessa said:

“I was wrong to use science as an excuse to be cruel.”

That was the apology I finally respected.

Specific.

No demand.

Lily did not hug her.

She said:

“Maybe you can come to soccer sometime.”

Vanessa nodded.

May you like

“If your parents say okay.”

Progress.
