Chapter 8 - LILY HEARD TOO MUCH

Children hear through walls.

We learned that painfully.

Lily had been told only:

There was a mistake at the fertility clinic before you were born.

Dad is still Dad.

Grandpa Richard has a biological connection we are figuring out.

That was all a seven-year-old needed.

Then she overheard Daniel and me arguing.

I said:

“Your father’s sperm created her.”

Lily heard:

Grandpa is her father.

The next morning she asked:

“Is Grandpa my daddy?”

I nearly dropped my coffee.

Daniel froze.

We sat with her.

Age-appropriate truth is difficult when biology itself is strange.

Daniel said:

“Grandpa Richard gave something to a doctor many years ago. The doctor used it when he wasn’t supposed to.”

“What thing?”

“A tiny part adults use to help make babies.”

She frowned.

“Like an egg?”

“Kind of. Moms have eggs. Dads have another kind of cell.”

“Grandpa’s cell made me?”

“Yes.”

She looked at Daniel.

“Then are you my uncle?”

The question destroyed him.

He took a breath.

“Biologically, the family tree is unusual.”

Lily frowned harder.

“What does that mean?”

“It means DNA would describe Grandpa differently than our family does.”

“Are you my dad?”

“Yes.”

She looked at me.

“Is he?”

“Yes.”

“Then okay.”

She wanted cereal.

Adults spent months in litigation over a distinction Lily resolved in eight seconds.

That did not mean biology was irrelevant.

It meant relationship had already formed.
