Chapter 1 - THE DENT IN THE REFRIGERATOR

Jonah slammed my sister into the refrigerator so hard the steel door buckled behind her spine.

The impact shook the magnets loose. A grocery list fluttered to the floor. Chloe’s phone flew from her hand, struck the wet tile, and broke apart beside a carton of spilled milk.

“Karina…” she gasped. “Don’t let him…”

Jonah still had one fist tangled in her hair.

Rain hammered the kitchen windows. Thunder rolled over the suburban street outside, but inside that kitchen, the loudest sound was Chloe trying to breathe.

I stood in the doorway, soaked through, my purse pressed under one arm.

For half a second, nobody moved.

Jonah released her slowly.

Not because he was ashamed.

Because he had seen me.

His face changed with frightening speed. Rage disappeared. His shoulders relaxed. Even his voice softened.

“You’re too late.”

Chloe slid down the refrigerator and landed beside the spilled groceries. One leg bent awkwardly beneath her. Her left hand searched blindly across the floor for the mobility cane Jonah had kicked beneath the table.

I looked at her bruised cheek.

Then at the fresh dent in the refrigerator.

Then at Jonah’s clenched right fist.

Linda Miller rushed in from the dining room wearing a cream cardigan and the smug expression of a woman who had rehearsed this moment.

She knelt beside Chloe and pulled her into an embrace that looked gentle from the doorway.

Her fingers dug into Chloe’s shoulder.

“Don’t embarrass this family,” she whispered.

Chloe flinched harder at those words than she had at the impact.

Jonah picked up the broken phone.

He opened the refrigerator and placed it carefully between a carton of eggs and a bowl of leftover pasta.

Then he closed the door.

“Say you slipped,” he told Chloe.

His tone was calm.

Practiced.

I understood immediately.

This was not the first time.

It was only the first time I had arrived before they cleaned it up.

I walked toward the refrigerator.

Jonah stepped into my path.

“Karina, this is a private matter.”

“No,” I said. “It stopped being private when she called me crying.”

His eyes flicked toward Chloe.

That tiny movement told me he had not known she reached me.

I moved around him and opened the refrigerator.

Cold air spilled across my face.

Chloe’s phone lay exactly where he had hidden it.

I picked it up by the edges.

Jonah’s smile vanished.

“Interesting choice,” I said.

Linda stood.

“You’re being dramatic.”

I opened my purse.

Inside was a clear evidence bag.

Jonah saw it.

His eyes narrowed.

I placed the phone inside without touching the shattered screen.

Then I photographed the dent, the groceries, the water on the floor, and Chloe’s injuries.

Jonah came toward me.

“Put that down.”

I raised my camera toward his face.

His hand stopped in midair.

Behind him, the front door opened.

Two police officers stepped into the kitchen.

Jonah turned slowly.

I slipped the sealed bag into my purse.

“Stay exactly where you are,” I said.

For the first time that night, fear entered his eyes.

May you like

Then Chloe whispered something from the floor that made both officers look at the refrigerator.

“There’s more inside.”
