Chapter 13 - THE DIRECT CONFRONTATION

Gas began pouring from the ceiling vents.

Helen coughed.

Sophie screamed.

David shot the first lock.

The bullet sparked against reinforced steel.

“We need another exit,” Ellison said.

Evelyn pointed toward the treatment room.

“Laundry shaft.”

Chloe moved Sophie toward it while Hale covered his mouth with his jacket.

I ran to the control panel.

The display required an administrator code.

Four digits.

I thought of the code Jonah used for the hidden room.

I entered it.

ACCESS DENIED.

Evelyn gripped the wall.

“Try your birthdays.”

Linda had built everything around ownership.

Dates mattered to her.

Chloe and I shared a birthday.

The screen turned green.

Ventilation stopped.

The locks released.

We escaped through the service tunnel as police tactical teams entered from above.

Judge Voss was not at Brookhaven.

He was already at the courthouse.

The sealed hearing had begun early.

Jonah stood beside him.

Linda sat at the petitioner’s table.

Dr. Pike appeared by video, claiming Chloe suffered dangerous delusions and had manipulated me into participating.

Their plan was simple.

Make the truth sound like shared madness.

We entered the courtroom at 8:43 a.m.

Every head turned.

Linda saw Evelyn.

Her face went white.

Voss struck the gavel.

“This hearing is sealed.”

Hale walked down the aisle.

“Not anymore.”

He handed the clerk a federal injunction and arrest warrants.

Voss did not read them.

“This court does not recognize—”

Evelyn stepped forward.

“You recognized me when you signed my death certificate.”

The room went silent.

Linda stood.

“She is not Evelyn Brooks.”

Evelyn looked at her.

“You said the same thing when you took my daughters.”

Voss called for security.

No one moved.

Detective Ellison placed a hard drive on the evidence table.

“We have your recordings.”

Jonah grabbed Chloe’s wheelchair handle.

I saw his hand close around the metal.

He leaned toward her ear.

“You still belong to me.”

Chloe looked up at him.

Then she drove her elbow into his ribs.

Jonah stumbled.

Sophie shouted, “Don’t touch my mom.”

The courtroom gasped.

I stepped between them.

Jonah’s face twisted.

All his polish disappeared.

“You ruined everything.”

“No,” Chloe said.

Her voice shook, but she did not lower it.

“You did.”

Linda moved toward the side door.

Officers blocked her.

Pike’s video feed vanished.

He was running.

Hale began presenting the Brookhaven files.

Voss stood.

“This hearing is terminated.”

Evelyn’s voice cut through the room.

“You don’t get to leave.”

He looked at her.

For one second, he was not a judge.

He was a frightened old man facing the woman he tried to erase.

Then Jonah reached inside his jacket.

Officer Ramirez drew his weapon.

“Hands!”

Jonah froze.

Slowly, he removed a phone.

He held it up.

“Everything uploads if I let go.”

The screen showed a live stream.

Private medical records.

Videos of Chloe drugged.

Images of Sophie in the hidden room.

Blackmail material ready for public release.

“Drop it,” Ellison said.

Jonah smiled.

“Arrest me and the whole country watches her break.”

Chloe’s breathing became uneven.

I looked at the phone.

Then at the courtroom security monitor.

A small red light blinked.

The stream was not going outside.

It was going to the courthouse system.

I smiled.

Jonah noticed.

“What?”

“You never understood evidence.”

I lifted the clear bag from my purse.

Inside was Chloe’s broken phone.

“It records both sides.”

His smile vanished.

May you like

Then the courtroom speakers came alive with his own voice.

I LOCKED SOPHIE UP BECAUSE CHLOE WOULDN’T SIGN.
