Chapter 6 - THE MEDICAL WITNESS

Jonah’s attorney secured his release before sunrise.

The assault charge remained, but his lawyers argued Chloe’s psychiatric history made her testimony unreliable.

The judge granted bail.

Linda was released with him.

By eight in the morning, Jonah had filed for emergency custody of Sophie.

By nine, his attorney submitted Chloe’s medical records.

By ten, a family court hearing was scheduled.

The speed was not normal.

It was coordinated.

Detective Ellison knew it too.

“Someone is clearing the road for him.”

Chloe looked physically ill.

“He told me nobody would believe me.”

I sat beside her hospital bed.

“Then we stop asking them to believe us.”

She looked at me.

“We show them.”

The hospital records from Chloe’s old surgery arrived that afternoon.

Dr. Pike had signed the admission.

The consent form authorized spinal surgery after a domestic fall.

A nurse named Helen Crowley had added a handwritten note.

PATIENT UNRESPONSIVE BEFORE REPORTED FALL TIME. BRUISING INCONSISTENT WITH STAIR INJURY.

The note had been crossed out.

Helen Crowley no longer worked at the hospital.

Ellison found her living two counties away.

She agreed to meet us in a church parking lot.

Helen was sixty-eight, with a trembling left hand and eyes that kept checking the road.

“I’ve waited three years for someone to ask.”

Chloe gripped her cane.

“What happened to me?”

Helen’s face softened.

“You were brought in unconscious.”

“By Jonah?”

“And his mother.”

“Did I fall?”

Helen hesitated.

“You had a head injury, but the swelling suggested you were struck before you went down the stairs.”

Chloe closed her eyes.

I felt rage rise behind my ribs.

“Why didn’t you report it?”

“I did.”

“To whom?”

“Dr. Pike.”

Helen looked ashamed.

“He told me Mrs. Miller was mentally unstable and had attacked her husband.”

“That was a lie,” Chloe said.

“I know that now.”

Helen opened her purse and removed a folded copy of a chart.

“I kept this.”

Ellison took it.

It showed toxicology results from the night of Chloe’s injury.

A powerful sedative had been found in her blood.

The official hospital record listed no toxicology screening.

“Pike deleted it,” I said.

Helen nodded.

“I confronted him.”

“What happened?”

“I lost my job two days later.”

Ellison photographed the document.

“This could establish medical fraud.”

Helen glanced around the parking lot again.

“There’s more.”

She pulled out a small flash drive.

“The trauma bay camera recorded every admission. I copied Chloe’s before they erased it.”

My hand tightened around the evidence bag in my purse.

“Why keep it?”

Helen looked at Chloe.

“Because your husband smiled while you were unconscious.”

We returned to the car and opened the footage on Ellison’s laptop.

The video showed Jonah wheeling Chloe into the emergency room.

Linda walked beside him.

Dr. Pike met them at the doors.

The sound was faint, but clear enough.

Jonah said, “She remembers too much.”

Pike answered, “Then we diagnose her before she wakes.”

Linda leaned over Chloe’s body.

“And the baby?”

Chloe went rigid.

I looked at her.

“What baby?”

Tears filled her eyes.

May you like

She touched her stomach with one trembling hand.

“I was pregnant.”
