Chapter 9 - THE OLDEST LIE

The broken phone was the only evidence they could not remotely erase.
That meant it contained something more valuable than the recordings we had already recovered.
The forensics team worked through the night.
At 4:17 a.m., they restored a deleted video.
It had been recorded automatically when Chloe dropped the phone days earlier.
The angle showed only part of the kitchen floor, but the audio was clear.
Linda said, “You should have died with the baby.”
Chloe answered, “You pushed me.”
Jonah whispered, “Lower your voice.”
Then Dr. Pike entered the kitchen.
His face appeared briefly in the reflection of the refrigerator.
Pike said, “The guardianship hearing is Friday. Once the judge signs, she loses access to Sophie and the trust.”
Chloe asked, “What did you do to my parents?”
A long silence followed.
Then Linda answered.
“Your mother made the same mistake you did.”
“What mistake?”
“She believed love made her brave.”
The recording ended with Jonah striking Chloe.
Hale issued arrest warrants for Pike and Linda on conspiracy charges.
Linda had vanished.
Pike never arrived at his clinic.
Jonah remained at home under electronic monitoring, protected by attorneys and security.
The guardianship hearing moved forward anyway.
That was the part I could not understand.
Then Hale discovered the judge assigned to Chloe’s case.
Judge Martin Voss.
He had signed every emergency psychiatric order Dr. Pike requested.
He had approved the transfer of Chloe’s trust.
And twenty years earlier, he had represented Linda during a sealed family lawsuit.
Ellison requested his recusal.
Denied.
At noon, we found George Weller.
He walked into a police station barefoot, bleeding, and terrified.
Two fingers on his left hand were broken.
He refused medical treatment until he spoke to Chloe and me.
We met inside an interview room.
He could barely look at us.
“I stole from your family.”
Chloe’s voice was cold.
“How much?”
“Not for myself.”
“That wasn’t the question.”
“Three million before your father discovered it.”
“Who told you to?”
“Linda.”
I leaned forward.
“Why?”
Weller stared at the table.
“Because the trust wasn’t created by your parents.”
A silence passed.
“Who created it?” I asked.
“Your biological mother.”
Chloe stopped breathing.
“Our mother raised us.”
“Yes.”
“Then who are you talking about?”
Weller’s eyes lifted.
“Linda Miller.”
The room went still.
Chloe shook her head.
“No.”
Weller began crying.
“Linda gave birth to twins thirty-six years ago.”
My pulse pounded.
“Twins?”
“You and Karina.”
I stared at him.
He continued.
“She was nineteen. The father was married and wealthy. Linda accepted money to disappear. Your parents adopted both of you privately.”
Chloe gripped the edge of the table.
“Why would she spend years destroying us?”
“Because your biological father created the trust.”
“Who was he?”
Weller swallowed.
“Judge Martin Voss.”
The door opened behind us.
Detective Ellison stood there, pale.
“Judge Voss just issued an order.”
May you like
“For what?”
“Immediate removal of Sophie from Chloe’s custody.”
