Chapter 12 - THE MOST IMPORTANT EVIDENCE

We breached the steel door.

The room beyond had once been a treatment ward.

Eight beds lined the walls.

Security cameras watched from every corner.

Sophie sat in the first bed.

Chloe reached her before anyone else.

They clung to each other, crying without words.

Three other patients occupied the room.

One was Helen Crowley, drugged but alive.

One was George Weller’s missing assistant.

The third woman was thin, gray-haired, and restrained at the wrists.

She looked at me.

Her eyes were my eyes.

Not similar.

Mine.

“Karina,” she whispered.

I could not move.

David stepped beside me.

“That’s Evelyn Brooks.”

The woman who raised us.

The mother we buried.

Chloe looked up from Sophie.

“No.”

Evelyn began crying.

“They gave you ashes.”

I walked toward her.

My knees felt weak.

“How?”

“Linda poisoned me. Pike declared me dead. Voss sealed the record.”

Her breath shook.

“They kept me alive because I knew where the original trust archive was hidden.”

For seven years, she had existed beneath Brookhaven.

Drugged.

Questioned.

Erased.

I unlocked her restraints.

Her hands touched my face.

“You look like your father.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“Which father?”

“The man who raised you.”

That answer broke something open inside me.

Biology suddenly felt smaller than loyalty.

Detective Ellison searched the ward.

Inside a locked cabinet, she found hard drives labeled with patient names.

Chloe Miller.

Evelyn Brooks.

Helen Crowley.

Sophie Miller.

Each drive contained camera recordings, medication logs, forged diagnoses, and payment records.

A full system of control.

Hale stared at the files.

“This is the case.”

“No,” Evelyn said.

Her voice was weak but certain.

“The case is behind the wall.”

David removed a vent panel.

Inside was a waterproof container.

My father’s original archive.

Bank transfers.

Judicial bribes.

Adoption records.

Medical fraud.

Audio from Linda.

Video of Jonah striking Chloe.

And one signed contract.

Judge Martin Voss had transferred custody of his newborn twins to Evelyn and Robert Brooks in exchange for silence regarding illegal campaign money.

Linda had accepted payment.

Then, decades later, she returned to claim the trust Voss created.

Not because she loved us.

Because she believed the money belonged to her.

At the bottom of the container lay a final video.

My father sat at his desk.

“If you are seeing this, Linda has already moved against us.”

His eyes looked tired.

“But the trust contains a failsafe.”

He lifted a document.

“All assets revert to Karina and Chloe jointly if coercion, incapacity fraud, or unlawful guardianship is proven.”

Chloe held Sophie tighter.

“How do we trigger it?”

Evelyn pointed to the hard drives.

“With live sworn testimony.”

Hale looked at his watch.

“Voss is holding a sealed guardianship hearing in three hours.”

I understood.

He planned to declare both Chloe and me legally incompetent.

Then Linda would control everything permanently.

We loaded the evidence into police vehicles.

As we moved Evelyn toward the exit, every light in Brookhaven shut off.

Emergency locks slammed into place.

The intercom clicked.

Judge Voss’s voice filled the ward.

“You should have stayed dead.”
