Chapter 7 - THE SISTER WHO FOUGHT BACK

Chloe had been eleven weeks pregnant the night she was injured.
She had never told me.
She had planned to leave Jonah first.
According to the medical footage, Linda knew.
So did Dr. Pike.
The official hospital file contained no pregnancy test.
No miscarriage report.
No fetal record.
Nothing.
They had erased the baby the same way they tried to erase Chloe’s abuse.
I drove directly to the district attorney’s office with Detective Ellison.
Chloe stayed at a protected medical facility with Sophie.
The assistant district attorney, Marcus Hale, watched the trauma footage twice.
His jaw tightened.
“This changes the case.”
“Then arrest Pike.”
“We need authentication.”
“Helen Crowley will testify.”
“She can establish custody of the copy. We still need the original system logs.”
“Get a warrant.”
Hale leaned back.
“You think I haven’t tried?”
I stared at him.
“Brookhaven’s legal team filed an injunction.”
“On what basis?”
“Patient privacy.”
I laughed without humor.
“They forged the records and now they’re hiding behind privacy?”
Hale’s expression remained grim.
“Jonah’s family has influence.”
“How much?”
“His late father donated to judicial campaigns, hospitals, and police foundations.”
“Then use federal charges.”
“We need financial evidence.”
I opened my purse.
The clear bag containing Chloe’s broken phone rested inside.
“We may have it.”
The phone had dried overnight.
A digital forensics technician removed the damaged storage chip.
Most of the data was corrupted.
But one encrypted folder survived.
Its title was simply HOME.
Inside were hundreds of audio recordings.
Jonah yelling.
Linda whispering threats.
Dr. Pike coaching Chloe to describe imaginary symptoms.
And one conversation about the trust.
Jonah’s voice said, “Once she signs the medical power of attorney, we move the last twelve million.”
Linda answered, “And Karina?”
“She still thinks the estate was insolvent.”
My hands went numb.
The recordings proved theft.
But they also proved something worse.
My parents’ estate attorney, George Weller, had been involved.
I remembered him sitting across from Chloe and me after the funeral.
His sympathetic eyes.
His soft voice.
There is no money left.
He had lied.
Hale obtained an emergency subpoena for Weller’s banking records.
Six shell companies connected Jonah, Linda, Pike, and Weller.
More than eighteen million dollars had passed through them.
The remaining money sat inside a private trust controlled by Chloe’s medical guardian.
Dr. Adrian Pike.
“This wasn’t domestic abuse that became financial,” Hale said.
“It was financial abuse from the beginning.”
My phone rang.
George Weller.
I answered on speaker.
His breathing sounded uneven.
“Karina, I need to see you.”
“You can speak to the police.”
“No.”
“Then we have nothing to discuss.”
“Your parents knew this would happen.”
My chest tightened.
“What?”
“They knew someone wanted the trust.”
“Who?”
Weller lowered his voice.
“Not Jonah.”
The line crackled.
Then I heard glass break.
Weller gasped.
A man said something in the background.
The call ended.
Ellison traced the number.
We reached Weller’s office twelve minutes later.
The front door was open.
His desk had been overturned.
Blood streaked the carpet.
Weller was gone.

On the wall behind his desk, someone had written three words in red marker.
