Chapter 13 - THE BOX SHE OPENED

A locksmith confirmed the document box had been forced with a flat tool.

He could not say when.

No fingerprints useful enough to identify anyone remained.

So the broken lock was evidence of tampering.

Not proof of who did it.

I kept reminding myself of that difference.

Then Rebecca remembered helping Camille carry boxes from my old house after Natalie died.

“She took paperwork home.”

“What paperwork?”

“She said tax records.”

“Did you see them?”

“No.”

Another assumption.

Family court issued an order requiring preservation of all financial records while the trust dispute continued.

Adrian’s attorneys complained the request was burdensome.

The judge disagreed.

Rachel received access to Haven Ridge’s accounting backups.

Most files were ordinary.

Then she found a project folder.

HARPER.

Inside were spreadsheets.

Mia’s age.

Trust estimates.

Property projections.

Grant work travel.

Preschool schedule.

Camille marriage timeline.

I stared at the last one.

It began before our first date.

January: grief contact.

March: regular family support.

June: overnight presence normalized.

September: household integration.

December: engagement probability.

I felt humiliated reading my life reduced to milestones.

Rachel touched my arm.

“Grant.”

“I’m fine.”

I wasn’t.

Then came the information twist.

The author field did not belong to Camille.

It belonged to Adrian.

He had designed the plan.

That did not make Camille innocent.

Her messages showed enthusiastic participation.

But the dynamic changed.

I had assumed Camille created the financial scheme and Adrian helped.

The documents suggested Adrian identified me as a target after researching Natalie’s estate.

Camille became the person he used to gain access.

Sibling loyalty turned into conspiracy.

More importantly, the spreadsheet revealed their original objective.

Not Mia’s settlement.

Not the land they didn’t yet know would skyrocket.

A commercial building Natalie inherited jointly with Mia’s trust.

Estimated value then: $2.1 million.

Adrian had been hunting protected family assets from the beginning.

The later land boom transformed a long con into an emergency opportunity.

Then Camille called Rebecca.

Despite the temporary restrictions.

Rebecca put the call on speaker and recorded after checking with counsel that doing so was lawful in our state.

Camille cried.

“Please tell Grant Adrian made me do things.”

I nearly spoke.

Rebecca held up a hand.

“What things?”

“I signed papers.”

“What papers?”

“I don’t know.”

“You told Grant he signed them.”

Silence.

Then Camille whispered, “Adrian said Grant would never notice.”

My pulse jumped.

Rebecca asked, “Did you hit Mia?”

Camille’s voice changed instantly.

“I am not discussing lies a toddler invented.”

There she was again.

Victim when discussing money.

Aggressor when discussing Mia.

Then Camille said something else.

“Ask Grant what Natalie knew before she died.”

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

It was bait.

I knew that.

But for the first time, Camille was claiming Natalie had discovered Adrian’s scheme while she was alive.

📖 Adrian’s files proved my marriage had been planned, but Camille’s final sentence raised a question Natalie herself may have tried to answer. 👇
