Chapter 18 - THE DOCTOR WHO SAID NO

Camille had not invented the fake evaluation from nothing.

She had contacted a child psychiatrist.

Dr. Elaine Foster.

The doctor agreed to speak with investigators after receiving proper authorization.

Camille had requested an appointment six weeks before Mia’s birthday.

Her stated concern:

“Mia lies about being hit.”

My hands shook when I read it.

Dr. Foster never examined Mia.

Why?

Because Camille refused to include me in the intake process.

“She said Mr. Harper was too emotionally vulnerable regarding his deceased wife,” Dr. Foster explained.

That sounded exactly like Camille.

The doctor insisted both legal guardians participate unless there was a safety reason not to.

Camille stopped responding.

That was a major payoff.

A professional had refused to validate the story Camille wanted.

So Camille created her own report.

Dr. Foster also preserved Camille’s intake email.

One paragraph said:

Mia frequently claims I hurt her when I enforce rules. I believe she learned this behavior because Grant rewards any reference to Natalie with excessive attention.

The sentence gave us another relationship consequence.

Camille did not merely resent Natalie.

She resented the attention Mia received for grieving.

I thought of every time I had rushed home because Mia was crying for her mother.

How often had Camille experienced that as competition?

That afternoon, Mia’s therapist gave me different advice.

“Stop trying to replace bad memories with good ones.”

I looked confused.

“She doesn’t need you to make the past disappear,” the therapist said. “She needs to learn that bad things happened and she is safe now.”

That applied to me too.

So we restored something Camille had removed.

Natalie’s photographs.

Not every wall.

Not a shrine.

Just ordinary family history.

One in Mia’s bedroom.

One beside the living room bookshelf.

One inside the album she chose herself.

The first night, Mia kissed the photograph and went to sleep.

No meltdown.

No “obsessive fixation.”

Just a child missing her mother.

Then Rachel called with financial news.

Haven Ridge had not only targeted Mia’s trust.

Adrian had used Camille’s forged access to take out a $600,000 personal loan secured partly by marital assets.

My signature appeared again.

This time the bank had already funded it.

The money was gone.

For the first time, our family faced an actual financial loss rather than an attempted one.

My instinct was to protect the house and business immediately.

Instead, I called counsel.

We froze what could legally be frozen.

We notified the bank.

We did it correctly.

Then investigators traced $170,000 of the loan.

It had paid Adrian’s creditors.

Another $90,000 went to Camille’s private account.

Her claim that she thought everything was being borrowed for Adrian became much harder to believe.

📖 A doctor’s refusal exposed Camille’s fabricated story about Mia, while the first completed theft proved she had personally profited from the fraud. 👇
