Chapter 15 - THE WRONG MOVE

I made my biggest mistake the next morning.
Rachel found a storage facility leased to Haven Ridge.
I wanted to go.
Thomas told me not to.
“Your lawyers can pursue it.”
“What if Adrian empties it?”
“We seek an order.”
“That takes time.”
“Grant.”
I went anyway.
Not alone.
I brought our corporate security director.
I told myself that made it responsible.
It didn’t.
The storage manager refused access without authorization.
Good.
I argued.
Bad.
Someone recorded me.
Worse.
Within hours, Camille’s attorney released video of me demanding access to “private property connected to my estranged wife.”
The clip made me look furious and entitled.
Because I was.
The guardian called Thomas.
“This behavior concerns me.”
That sentence hit harder than Camille’s attacks.
I had spent weeks trying to show Mia I could protect her without losing control.
Then I did exactly that.
I apologized to the guardian in writing.
No excuses.
I also apologized to Rebecca.
“You told me to stop reacting.”
“I did.”
“I thought I was helping.”
“You keep thinking intention cancels impact.”
I looked at her.
She shrugged.
“Runs in the family.”
Fair.
The consequence came quickly.
At the next hearing, the judge warned me not to interfere with evidence collection or civil discovery.
Camille smiled across the courtroom.
She had won that round.
Then Adrian reappeared.
Not because I found him.
Because federal investigators did.
The $420,000 transfer had triggered a bank suspicious-activity alert.
Adrian attempted to withdraw part of it through a casino account two states away.
He was detained for questioning but not immediately charged with everything we suspected.
Evidence needed to be built.
That humbled me again.
Real investigations did not move at the speed of anger.
The storage unit was searched later under lawful authority after financial investigators established probable cause.
Inside were computers.
Paper files.
Three phones.
And dozens of household photographs.
My house.
Rebecca’s house.
Natalie’s old house.
Mia’s preschool.
The photos stretched back almost three years.
Adrian had been mapping us before Natalie died.
Then investigators found something deeply personal.
A printed picture of Natalie and me at a charity gala.
Across my face Adrian had written:
ACCESS POINT.
Across Natalie:
BLOCKER.
Across infant Mia:
ASSET.
I stared at those words.
For the first time, the entire structure was visible.
I was never the prize.
Camille’s marriage was never the prize.
Mia was not even a child to them.
May you like
She was an asset protected by adults they planned to manipulate one by one.
📖 Adrian’s storage unit exposed the family as a financial target, but one recovered phone would show how far Camille willingly went to make the plan work. 👇
