Chapter 22 - THE SCREEN RECORDING

Natalie’s phone automatically captured screen recordings when Mia pressed certain combinations.

Most were accidental.

One occurred eight nights before her birthday.

Mia had apparently opened the screen recorder before leaving the phone beneath the sofa.

The video showed darkness for forty minutes.

Then someone picked it up.

Camille.

Her face appeared briefly as she checked whether the device was active.

She did not notice the red recording icon.

She opened my tablet.

The phone camera caught the tablet screen from an angle.

Camille entered my passcode.

I had given it to her.

Another failure of convenience.

She opened our document-signing application.

Then called Adrian.

“I’m in.”

His voice came through speaker.

“Export the certificate.”

“I don’t see it.”

“Settings. Security.”

Camille followed instructions.

The process took three minutes.

Then Adrian said:

“Now I can build the signature package.”

That answered the question.

Camille stole the certificate.

Adrian constructed the digital forgery.

Both participated.

Neither could shift full responsibility.

Then Camille asked, “What if Grant gets an alert?”

Adrian replied, “Delete it.”

She did.

The screen recording captured her opening my email and removing the security notification.

I watched the video in stunned silence.

Technology had not betrayed me.

I had ignored it.

If I had reviewed alerts.

If I had separated accounts.

If I had not given broad access.

But again, responsibility needed boundaries.

Carelessness made fraud easier.

It did not make fraud mine.

Prosecutors added the recording to their evidence list.

Camille’s attorney challenged admissibility and privacy issues.

The judge held hearings.

Parts were admitted based on the circumstances and applicable law.

Parts were limited.

Real cases were messy.

The strongest segment survived.

Then Adrian testified under his plea agreement.

He admitted targeting my family.

He admitted researching Natalie’s assets.

He admitted encouraging Camille’s relationship with me.

He admitted building Haven Ridge around expected access.

Camille’s defense attacked him aggressively.

“You’re blaming your sister to reduce your prison sentence.”

“Yes,” Adrian said.

The courtroom went still.

He continued.

“I’m also telling the truth.”

That answer was stronger because he admitted self-interest.

Then the prosecutor asked why he began recording Camille.

Adrian looked toward her.

“Because I realized she wasn’t scared of getting caught anymore.”

Camille stared back.

“What was she scared of?”

“Grant choosing Mia over her.”

My stomach tightened.

Adrian explained that after our marriage, Camille increasingly complained that Natalie remained “present” through Mia.

She wanted photographs removed.

She wanted Mia to stop asking for Natalie.

Adrian told her none of that mattered financially.

Camille replied:

“It matters to me.”

Greed built the scheme.

Jealousy made it cruel.

The two motives had finally separated clearly.
