Chapter 1 - THE NECKLACE

Vanessa’s hand struck Emily across the face before I reached the foyer.

The slap cracked through the marble entrance hall.

Emily stumbled sideways beside the oversized brown leather handbag sitting near the console table. One hand flew to her cheek.

“You stole it!” Vanessa shouted.

Every guest froze.

My mother, Margaret, stood near the staircase with one hand against her pearls.

Emily shook her head desperately.

“I swear… I didn’t take anything.”

Vanessa snatched the brown handbag from the floor and held it high enough for everyone to see.

“She was leaving with this.”

Emily was crying now.

“I wasn’t leaving. Mrs. Carter asked me to bring coats upstairs.”

Vanessa gave a cold laugh.

“Of course she did.”

I stepped between them.

“Enough.”

Vanessa stared at me.

“Daniel, stay out of this.”

“You just hit an employee in front of thirty people.”

“She stole from your mother.”

I took the handbag from her.

“Then we find out what happened without hitting anyone.”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Fine. Open it.”

Her confidence bothered me.

Not because I believed Emily was incapable of stealing.

Because Vanessa looked like someone who already knew exactly what I would find.

I opened the zipper.

Wallet.

House keys.

A folded grocery receipt.

A compact umbrella.

Then my fingers touched something cold.

I pulled it out.

My mother gasped.

The Carter diamond necklace.

Twenty-one diamonds set around an antique platinum chain.

My grandfather bought it for Margaret on her twenty-fifth wedding anniversary.

It had been locked in the wall safe in her upstairs dressing room less than an hour earlier.

Emily stared at it.

“No.”

Vanessa smiled.

“Still going to deny it?”

Emily looked at me as if I were the only person standing between her and a cliff.

“Mr. Carter, I never touched that necklace.”

I looked at my mother.

“Who knew it was in the safe?”

Margaret swallowed.

“Family.”

That was not an answer.

Vanessa pointed toward Emily.

“She has access to every bedroom in this house.”

Emily started shaking harder.

“I didn’t go near Mrs. Carter’s safe.”

I believed fear.

I did not yet know whether I believed innocence.

Then I looked upward.

The foyer security camera.

Installed after a burglary attempt six months earlier.

It covered the console table, front door, staircase, and half the hallway leading toward the guest rooms.

I turned toward the security monitor built into the side wall.

“Play the footage.”

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

Just for a second.

Then she recovered.

“Absolutely.”

I watched her carefully.

“Good.”

Our security manager, Paul Givens, was already moving toward the touchscreen.

Vanessa stepped backward.

Emily noticed.

So did Margaret.

Paul pulled up the previous hour.

Before he pressed play, he frowned.

“What?”

He enlarged the timeline.

“The handbag has been sitting in the foyer for twenty-three minutes.”

Emily nodded quickly.

“I put it there before I carried champagne upstairs.”

Paul zoomed in on the bag.

Then he looked at me.

“Mr. Carter, Emily never touched it again until Mrs. Carter accused her.”

Vanessa interrupted.

“That proves nothing.”

Paul pointed at the screen.

“No.”

Then he moved the cursor six minutes backward.

“But somebody else did.”

Vanessa went completely still.

A single preview frame appeared.

Black dress.

Diamond bracelet.

📖 The first security frame made Emily’s guilt suddenly doubtful, but the full recording would show why Vanessa needed the necklace inside that bag before I arrived. 👇
