Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN IN THE BLACK DRESS

Vanessa filed for divorce.

Before I did.

Her petition accused me of financial coercion.

She claimed the Carter family had used trusts and prenups to keep her economically dependent.

That was partly emotional truth.

Legally, she had substantial separate property.

But public narratives do not need complete balance.

Then she accused me of orchestrating Emily’s accusation to force her out before Margaret changed the trust.

I laughed when Michael read it.

He did not.

“She’s building an alternative motive.”

“CCTV shows her plant the necklace.”

“She’ll say she did that for another reason.”

“What reason?”

We found out two hours later.

Vanessa’s attorney issued a statement.

Vanessa Carter acknowledges placing the necklace in Emily Carter’s handbag as part of an ill-advised attempt to confirm ongoing employee misconduct after repeated theft concerns.

I stared.

“She admits it?”

Michael nodded.

“Strategically.”

By conceding what the video proved, Vanessa tried to reclassify framing as a private employment test.

Cruel.

Stupid.

But separate from financial fraud.

Then she said Emily had been stealing minor items for months.

No police reports.

No inventory.

No prior termination process.

Only Vanessa’s private notes.

Created recently.

Very recently.

Metadata showed the theft log began two days before the party.

Backdated entries.

Another problem.

Then Vanessa released photographs.

Emily inside bedrooms.

Emily opening drawers.

Emily carrying jewelry boxes.

Normal housekeeping tasks captured without context.

People online believed whatever they wanted.

The slap became “confrontation.”

The planted necklace became “test.”

The financial documents became “estate planning disagreement.”

I wanted to respond publicly.

Michael refused.

“Your mother’s trust is not a press release.”

So I stayed quiet.

It felt like losing.

Then Emily asked to leave the mansion.

Not quit.

Leave physically.

“I can’t sleep here.”

I realized how selfishly I had assumed exoneration meant she could resume work.

“No one expects you to.”

Margaret offered a hotel.

Emily accepted only after Caroline arranged it as paid administrative leave, not charity.

That distinction mattered to her.

Then she told me:

“I think Mrs. Vanessa knew about the camera.”

“What?”

“The foyer camera.”

“She went pale when I looked at it.”

I remembered.

Vanessa knew it existed.

Why frame Emily in camera view?

Paul reviewed the system.

The camera normally recorded only motion clips.

But during large events, it switched to continuous recording automatically.

Vanessa may not have known tonight’s party activated event mode.

Usually, six-second motions could be overwritten quickly.

She may have believed opening the handbag would disappear among dozens of clips.

Not genius.

Risk.

Then Paul found an attempted deletion request from Vanessa’s phone at 6:31 p.m.

Two minutes before she accused Emily.

It failed because event mode required administrator approval.

She had tried to erase the planting.

That changed the “employment test” story.

An honest test would need proof.

She tried to destroy proof.

📖 Vanessa publicly admitted planting the necklace but called it a test, until her failed attempt to delete the footage showed she never intended anyone to see how the “test” worked. 👇
