Chapter 2 - THE SIX SECONDS

Paul played the video.
There was no sound.
We did not need it.
Emily placed her brown handbag beside the console table at 6:14 p.m.
She walked upstairs carrying three garment bags.
At 6:23, Vanessa entered the foyer.
She looked toward the dining room.
Then toward the staircase.
Nobody nearby.
She opened Emily’s handbag.
Reached into the pocket of her black dress.
Pulled out something bright.
Dropped it inside.
Six seconds.
That was all it took.
Then she closed the zipper and walked away.
The foyer became silent.
Emily covered her mouth.
Margaret sat down on the bottom stair.
I turned toward my wife.
“Why?”
Vanessa did not answer.
“Why did you put my mother’s necklace in Emily’s bag?”
Her chin lifted.
“You don’t know what you’re looking at.”
“I’m looking at you planting stolen jewelry.”
“I didn’t steal it.”
Margaret looked up sharply.
“What?”
Vanessa exhaled.
“You gave me the necklace.”
My mother’s face changed.
I turned.
“Mom?”
Margaret looked embarrassed.
“I asked Vanessa to take it downstairs.”
“Why?”
“For the insurance appraiser.”
Vanessa seized on that.
“Exactly.”
I stared at her.
“That explains why you had the necklace.”
“It explains everything.”
“No. It explains access.”
Emily whispered:
“She put it in my bag.”
Vanessa’s eyes moved toward her.
Cold.
Then back to me.
“I was trying to prove something.”
“What?”
“That Emily has been snooping.”
I almost laughed.
“You prove someone is snooping by framing her for theft?”
“She has been going through private rooms.”
Emily shook her head.
“No.”
Vanessa stepped toward her.
“You were in Margaret’s study yesterday.”
“I clean it.”
“You opened drawers.”
“I dusted the desk.”
Vanessa looked at me.
“She has been watching us.”
“Watching what?”
Silence.
There it was.
The question Vanessa did not want.
I asked again.
“What was Emily watching?”
Vanessa folded her arms.
“This household has confidential family business. Staff should not be involving themselves.”
Emily suddenly looked down.
That reaction mattered.
I turned to her.
“Did you see something?”
Vanessa snapped.
“Daniel.”
I ignored her.
“Emily?”
Her voice shook.
“I saw Mrs. Carter in Mrs. Margaret’s study.”
“Doing what?”
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Do not answer that.”
Paul looked at me.
I held up one hand.
“Vanessa, stop talking.”
Emily wiped tears from her cheek.
“She had the blue folder.”
Margaret went still.
“What blue folder?”
Emily looked at her.
“The one from your attorney.”
My mother’s face lost color.
I knew the folder.
Margaret had received it two days earlier from Grant & Pierce, the firm that handled the Carter family trust.
She had refused to discuss the contents with me until after tonight’s dinner.
“What did Vanessa do with it?”
Emily swallowed.
“She took pictures.”
Vanessa laughed.
“That is absurd.”
Emily continued.
“And she had your silver security key.”
Margaret stood.
“No.”
I looked between them.
“What key?”
My mother touched the pearls at her neck.
“The digital key for my trust account.”
Silence.
Vanessa’s face changed again.
Then Margaret whispered:
“That key is supposed to be locked in my study safe.”
The necklace had been planted to frame Emily.

But Emily had just described something potentially worth far more than diamonds.
📖 Vanessa’s frame-up collapsed in six seconds, but Emily’s statement about Margaret’s trust key turned a humiliating theft accusation into a possible financial crime. 👇
