Chapter 14 - THE NOTARY
The forged temporary agency document had been notarized remotely.
That bothered Caroline from the beginning.
Margaret never appeared before a notary.
The platform retained video.
A woman appeared.
Similar hair.
Similar age.
Large glasses.
Camera slightly dark.
She held Margaret’s driver’s license.
Answered identity questions.
Then signed electronically.
My mother watched three seconds and said:
“That is not me.”
The notary, Susan Hale, believed it was.
Why?
Correct ID.
Correct address.
Correct previous mortgage lender.
Correct trust attorney.
Information available inside Margaret’s files.
Then forensic review sharpened the image.
The woman was not Vanessa.
Different jaw.
Different voice.
Vanessa had an accomplice.
Building access logs from the office used for notarization identified three people.

And Miles Warren.
I knew Miles.

This is literally pretending to be your mother-in-law.

Fifteen now, fifteen after closing.
Paige negotiated the price.
Not innocent.

Vanessa:
He won’t until the money is already in Vantage.

Then Miles Warren’s role.
He prepared the temporary agency form.
Vanessa told him Margaret had verbally approved.
Did he believe her?
At first, perhaps.

He stayed.

He refused further questions initially.
Then Vanessa blamed him publicly.
Her attorney said Miles “created technical documents without properly explaining them.”
The alliance cracked.

The frame-up was not an impulsive response to Emily threatening disclosure that night.
Vanessa had been planning to “handle” her for forty-eight hours.
Then the twist.
Miles responded later:
Do not manufacture anything against staff. Fire her if necessary, but do not get clever.
He had boundaries.
Weak ones.
Late ones.

Vanessa ignored him.
