Chapter 12 - THE WITNESS WHO CHOSE US

I threw myself over Lily as the shot fired.
The bullet struck the metal frame of the wheelchair.
Agents pulled us behind a concrete column.
The shooter escaped across an adjoining roof, leaving behind a rifle purchased through a company controlled by Jonathan.
Melissa survived surgery.
Before losing consciousness, she gave Naomi a storage key.
The original list in the maternity wing had been a copy.
The master evidence was hidden in a bank vault under Lily’s birth name.
Only Lily could access it.
Sarah had unknowingly preserved the key by keeping Lily’s forged identity active.
The next morning, the court granted temporary protection to both Lily and my unborn child.
Michael’s competency petition was dismissed.
Sarah’s custody rights were suspended.
Diane was charged with kidnapping and conspiracy.
For the first time, I slept for two full hours without waking to footsteps.
Then contractions began.
I was only thirty-four weeks pregnant.
Dr. Hale ordered immediate monitoring.
The stress and repeated sedation had triggered early labor.
Lily refused to leave my side.
“I’ve already lost thirteen years,” she said. “I’m not losing today.”
Rebecca entered with the bank vault records.
The account required Lily, Melissa, and Jonathan’s signatures.
Melissa was unconscious.
Jonathan was missing.
But a sealed judicial exception allowed access upon proof that one signer was deceased.
Jonathan had legally declared himself dead years earlier.
His own fraud unlocked the vault.
Inside were thousands of birth certificates, payment records, DNA profiles, and videos.
There was also a letter addressed to me in my father’s handwriting.
Emily,
If you are reading this, Melissa failed to protect the mission.
I opened the next page.
Jonathan described a planned evacuation of key Providence members. They had safe houses, false passports, and replacement identities.
He had prepared to disappear with twelve children considered “high-value medical assets.”
Lily’s name topped the list.
My unborn child was second.
Naomi issued nationwide alerts.
Airports and borders were notified.
Then a hospital administrator entered with terrible news.
A transport order had appeared in the system under Rebecca’s credentials.
It authorized moving me to a secure maternity facility.
Rebecca had not signed it.
The destination was Saint Agnes.
The same private center where Sarah planned Lily’s transplant.
Hospital security locked down the floor.
But the forged order had already been used once.
A newborn from another room had been taken fifteen minutes earlier.
The missing baby’s mother was seventeen.
Her name was Anna Grant.
Melissa’s granddaughter.
The network was still operating while its founders sat in custody.
A nurse found a card inside the empty bassinet.
