Chapter 8 - THE BODY IN MY FATHER’S GRAVE

Fire climbed the staircase as officers forced open a basement utility tunnel.

We crawled through freezing mud beneath the house and emerged near the lake just before the roof collapsed.

Richard suffered burns on his hands.

Rebecca protected the ledger beneath her coat.

The evidence survived.

So did the accusation.

The man I called my father, Jonathan Carter, had supposedly died in a plane accident ten years earlier. His coffin had remained closed because of the condition of the body.

Naomi obtained an emergency exhumation order.

The remains inside were female.

DNA identified her as Melissa Grant, a nurse who disappeared after reporting suspicious births at Dr. Cole’s clinic.

My father’s death had been staged using a murdered witness.

A financial search found recent transactions from Jonathan’s trust routed through Providence Family Services.

He was alive.

And he had been funding everything.

Diane laughed when confronted.

“You finally found the beginning.”

My father had not been a passive political figure manipulated by Judge Hale.

He founded the network.

He believed children born into scandal, poverty, or “unfit” families could be reassigned to wealthier homes.

He called it correction.

Diane called it legacy.

I called it trafficking.

The recovered ledger gave Naomi enough to suspend Michael’s guardianship petition and block the adoption.

For the first time, my baby was legally protected.

But Lily was not.

Sarah’s attorneys produced an old custody order declaring Lily mentally incompetent due to her medical condition. Sarah still controlled some treatment decisions unless the order was overturned.

A hearing was scheduled for the next morning.

Sarah appeared by video from jail wearing a plain beige uniform. She cried before the judge.

“I love my daughter.”

Lily sat beside me.

Her hands shook, but her voice did not.

“You bought me.”

Sarah’s tears stopped.

“I raised you.”

“You used me.”

“I kept you alive.”

“You were preparing to cut pieces out of my sister.”

The courtroom went silent.

Rebecca submitted the summer-house ledger, hidden-camera videos, transplant messages, and forged documents.

Sarah’s attorney argued the records were stolen and unreliable.

Then a witness entered.

A woman in a wheelchair with a scar across her throat.

Melissa Grant.

The body in my father’s grave was not Melissa.

The DNA report had been falsified.

Melissa was alive.

She had been hidden in a state psychiatric facility under another name for ten years.

She looked directly at Sarah.

“I watched Jonathan Carter choose which babies were worth more.”

Then she looked at me.

“And I delivered Lily.”

Melissa had saved one original birth record.

She handed it to Naomi.

The father’s name had not been redacted.

It read MICHAEL CARTER.

My husband had fathered Lily when I was seventeen.

He was twenty-seven.

He had known me long before our marriage.
