Chapter 14 - THE FATHER IN THE COURTROOM
The donor was Dr. Adrian Cole.
He had used his own genetic material while pretending to follow Jonathan’s order.
Cole claimed he did it to create leverage.
A biological child connected him permanently to the Carter trust and Providence assets.
He intended to reveal paternity after my death and claim custody.
My daughter had been designed as an inheritance key.
Naomi charged him with assault, trafficking, medical fraud, and conspiracy.
The preliminary hearing began ten days later.
I entered the courtroom holding my newborn daughter, Grace.
Lily walked beside me.
Michael sat at the defense table with Sarah, Diane, Cole, and several former Providence administrators.
Melissa appeared from the hospital by video.
Her testimony lasted three hours.
She explained the network’s creation, Jonathan’s leadership, Judge Hale’s sealed orders, Sarah’s sales, Diane’s recruitment, Cole’s procedures, and Michael’s role in controlling me.
The defense attacked her credibility.
Then Naomi played the hidden bedroom recording.
The courtroom heard Sarah slap me.
It heard Michael threaten my life.
It heard me identify the chain, forged signature, and camera.
It captured Sarah admitting Lily had been born.
Michael lowered his head.
Sarah stared straight ahead.
Diane cried for the jury.
No jury existed yet.
She performed anyway.
Rebecca testified about my injuries and the false medical orders. She also admitted hiding evidence connected to her father years earlier.
The defense tried to use that admission to discredit her.
Instead, Rebecca handed Naomi a sealed envelope.
Judge Hale had mailed it before disappearing from the nursing facility.
Inside was a confession.
He admitted signing illegal adoptions and competency orders under Jonathan’s direction. He named dozens of officials.
He also revealed Jonathan was alive after the orphanage explosion.
The courtroom erupted.
Federal agents moved toward the exits.
Then the judge’s monitor activated by itself.
Jonathan appeared live from an unknown location.
Behind him were the three missing children.
“Release the defendants,” he said, “or these families lose what they bought.”
Naomi looked sick.
The children had been placed in adoptive homes years earlier.
Jonathan was threatening to reveal their origins publicly and destroy their lives.
He demanded immunity for Diane and Sarah, access to the Providence accounts, and custody of Grace.
The judge refused.
Jonathan smiled.
“Then ask Emily which daughter she wants to save.”
The camera shifted.
A second chair appeared.
Lily sat tied to it.
I turned toward the seat beside me.
It was empty.
The girl who had walked into court with me had vanished during Rebecca’s testimony.
