Chapter 7 - THE SUMMER HOUSE

Richard admitted he had known Lily since she was five.

Sarah brought her to a lake house every summer for “medical observation.” Dr. Cole collected blood, bone marrow, and tissue samples while telling Lily they were routine tests.

Richard claimed he believed the procedures were legal.

Lily stood from her bed.

“You held me down.”

His face collapsed.

“I thought they were protecting you.”

“You heard me scream.”

No explanation could survive those words.

Naomi separated him from us and questioned him for six hours.

His statement revealed a family arrangement formed long before my birth.

Judge Hale used his court to seal illegal adoptions.

Diane recruited vulnerable girls.

Sarah arranged buyers.

Dr. Cole handled births and biological matching.

Richard managed properties where mothers were hidden before delivery.

Michael laundered payments after marrying me.

Every person called it protection.

Every person profited.

Richard denied being Lily’s biological father. He said the DNA file had been deliberately altered to destroy him if he ever spoke.

He offered the location of paper records kept at the summer house.

Naomi assembled a search team.

I demanded to go.

Rebecca objected because I was eight months pregnant and recovering from confinement.

But the hearing on my competency was approaching, and the original records could prove Michael’s fraud.

We traveled with officers to an isolated house beside a frozen lake.

Lily stayed at the hospital under guard.

The house smelled of cedar and disinfectant.

In the basement, police found three medical beds, infant scales, restraints, and cabinets filled with old patient files.

One room contained children’s drawings.

Lily’s name appeared on dozens.

In one drawing, a woman stood behind a barred window.

The word MOM was written above her.

Lily had remembered me without knowing who I was.

Rebecca found a ledger inside a locked freezer.

It listed birth dates, buyers, medical conditions, and prices.

Beside Lily’s entry was a note:

MATCH RETAINED FOR FUTURE HARVEST.

My knees weakened.

They had never seen her as a daughter.

Only an asset.

Detective Ortiz discovered a hidden camera network still transmitting.

Someone had watched us enter.

The police sealed the exits.

Then smoke began pouring from the upper floor.

The house had been set on fire remotely.

Rebecca grabbed the ledger.

We moved toward the back door, but steel shutters dropped over every window.

Richard stared at the control panel.

“Only one person knows this system.”

“Who?” Ortiz demanded.

He looked at me.

“Your father.”

“My father is dead.”

May you like

Richard shook his head.

“No, Emily. The man buried in his grave was one of the mothers who tried to expose us.”
