Chapter 5 - MY MOTHER’S VERSION

My mother’s name was Diane Carter.
For eight years, I had visited an empty grave engraved with it.
She sat in an interrogation room alive, composed, and completely certain she had done nothing wrong.
Rebecca, Ortiz, and I watched through one-way glass.
Diane claimed my pregnancy at seventeen threatened Michael’s family, my father’s political connections, and her own reputation.
She said I became pregnant after a party but remembered nothing because I had been intoxicated.
Judge Hale arranged a sealed delivery.
Sarah, then twenty-five, wanted a child and agreed to raise Lily.
“Did you know I was drugged?” I asked through the speaker.
Diane smiled toward the camera.
“You were emotional. Medication was necessary.”
“Who was Lily’s father?”
Her smile faded.
“That information protected everyone.”
“Protected whom?”
She refused to answer.
Instead, she offered a deal.
She would reveal the biological father if Ortiz released Sarah and dropped the kidnapping charges against Michael.
Ortiz ended the interview.
In the hallway, Rebecca pressed both palms against the wall.
“My father built this.”
“Then help me destroy it,” I said.
She looked at me.
Something hardened behind her grief.
By morning, a federal prosecutor named Naomi Brooks joined the case. She had investigated illegal adoption networks for six years.
Sarah’s clinic appeared in three unresolved cases involving teenage mothers whose babies vanished after emergency deliveries.
All three cases passed through Judge Hale’s courtroom.
Michael’s financial records revealed large payments from adoptive families.
The phrase “sell my child” had not been metaphorical.
They had sold many.
Lily listened from her hospital bed.
She blamed herself for my current baby being targeted.
I held her face in my hands.
“You were a child then, and you’re a child now. None of this belongs to you.”
She cried silently against my chest.
That was the first moment she let me hold her.
A forensic nurse photographed the marks on my ankle and wrist. The chain, forged adoption form, hidden camera, and recorded threats were entered into evidence.
The hidden camera had streamed to a cloud server.
Naomi obtained a warrant.
The server contained hundreds of videos.
Not only mine.
Women signing adoptions while sedated.
Teenagers crying in recovery rooms.
Nurses exchanging bracelets between newborns.
One video showed Diane handing infant Lily to Sarah.
Another showed Judge Hale standing beside my hospital bed.
But the final file was recorded three months earlier.
Michael sat across from an unknown man.
The man pushed a contract toward him.
Michael said, “Emily believes the baby is mine.”
The unknown man replied, “She cannot learn otherwise until after delivery.”
The camera angle shifted just enough to reveal his face.
Dr. Adrian Cole.
Rebecca whispered, “He isn’t just the transplant coordinator.”
May you like
I remembered him from my childhood.
He had treated me after the party where I became pregnant with Lily.
