Chapter 2 - THE GIRL AT THE DOOR

The girl could not have been more than thirteen, yet the word she spoke shattered every lie in the room.

Mom.

Michael released the chain.

Sarah dropped the files.

Dr. Rebecca Hale rushed in behind the girl with Detective Lena Ortiz and two uniformed officers. Michael moved toward the window, but Ortiz drew her weapon.

“Hands where I can see them.”

Sarah immediately began crying.

It was not fear.

It was performance.

“She attacked us,” she said, pointing at me. “Emily became violent. We were trying to protect the baby.”

Detective Ortiz looked at the chain around my ankle.

“By chaining her to a bed?”

Sarah pressed a hand to her chest. “She asked us to restrain her.”

The teenage girl crossed the room before anyone could stop her.

She knelt beside me and touched my face with trembling fingers.

“My name is Lily.”

My lungs stopped working.

Two years earlier, I had awakened in a private clinic with blood between my legs and Michael holding my hand. He told me our daughter had been stillborn.

He said there had been nothing to bury.

Lily was not a newborn.

She was thirteen.

That meant the secret was larger than one stolen baby.

Rebecca unlocked the chain with a key recovered from Michael’s pocket. She examined my bruises, then checked my daughter’s heartbeat with a portable monitor.

“She needs a hospital.”

Michael finally spoke.

“That girl is not hers.”

Lily turned toward him.

“You told me she was dead.”

His mouth tightened.

Ortiz seized the scattered adoption papers. Beneath the top document was another consent form dated thirteen years earlier.

My signature appeared at the bottom.

At thirteen, I would have been seventeen.

I remembered no pregnancy.

No delivery.

No child.

Rebecca saw my confusion.

“They drugged you,” she said softly. “Your family told everyone you had a nervous breakdown.”

Fragments returned.

A summer I could never explain.

My mother sending me to a private wellness center.

Waking with stitches.

Months missing from my memory.

Lily took off her hospital bracelet and placed it in my hand.

The patient name read Lillian Mitchell.

Sarah’s last name.

Sarah had raised my daughter as her own.

Ortiz handcuffed Michael.

Sarah screamed that she had legal custody.

“Then you can explain the forged birth certificate downtown,” Ortiz said.

As officers led them away, Michael looked back at me.

“You think this ends with us?”

His eyes moved toward Lily.

“She doesn’t know what she is.”

Lily went still.

Rebecca placed herself between them.

But Michael smiled.

“Ask Dr. Hale who paid for Emily’s first pregnancy.”

The officers dragged him into the hall.

I turned toward Rebecca.

Her face had lost all color.

Before she could answer, Lily’s bracelet began beeping.

Rebecca grabbed her wrist.

“What medication are you on?”

“I don’t know. Sarah said it keeps me calm.”

The bracelet displayed an alert from a connected medical monitor.

LILY MITCHELL — TRANSPLANT PREPARATION ACTIVE.

Beneath it was a scheduled procedure time.

Tomorrow, 6:00 a.m.
