Chapter 1 - Know Your Place

Tristan ripped the microphone from its stand and slammed the metal base against the altar.

The crash sent Maisie’s bouquet sliding across the white cloth.

Champagne glasses trembled.

Two hundred wedding guests fell silent.

Tristan pointed at the elderly man standing near the front row in faded jeans and a fluorescent gardening vest.

“Know your place.”

James Evans lowered his head.

His weathered hands curled at his sides.

He had spent the morning trimming hedges at the community venue because the florist had canceled and Maisie wanted everything perfect.

He had changed his shirt.

He had washed the dirt from his hands.

But he had kept the yellow vest on because its pocket held the worn gardening gloves his late wife had given him.

Tristan had hated it from the moment James entered the hall.

“You look like hired help,” he had whispered.

James had smiled weakly.

“Most days, I am.”

Now Tristan humiliated him in front of the entire town.

James’s knees buckled.

Maisie caught him before he fell.

His hand gripped the lace of her wedding dress.

“I ruined everything,” he whispered.

Maisie looked at her father.

Then she looked at the man she had nearly married.

Without releasing James, she removed her engagement ring.

The diamond hit the floor with a sharp click.

It rolled toward Tristan’s polished shoe.

“No,” Maisie said. “He did.”

A low engine sound rose outside.

The open double doors filled with black official vehicles and uniformed soldiers.

A decorated Army commander entered with an aide carrying a sealed dark folder.

He walked past Tristan without acknowledging him.

Then he stopped three feet in front of James.

The elderly gardener raised his head.

The commander snapped his heels together.

He saluted.

Every soldier outside mirrored him.

James’s bent back slowly straightened.

And Tristan’s face lost all color.

👉 The groom had mocked an old gardener—but the Army had come looking for someone far more important.
