Chapter 5 - Colonel Evans

The word moved through the wedding hall like thunder.

Colonel.

Tristan looked from the commander to James.

“That’s impossible.”

The commander finally turned toward him.

“Is it?”

Tristan’s confidence faltered.

James lowered the officer’s salute with a quiet nod.

“At ease, Commander.”

His voice had changed.

Not louder.

Stronger.

The commander introduced himself as Brigadier General Nathan Cole.

He had traveled from Fort Bliss after learning where James would be.

The soldiers outside were members of an Army medical evacuation unit.

Maisie looked at her father.

“You were a colonel?”

James avoided her eyes.

“A long time ago.”

General Cole looked toward the sealed folder.

“Sir, what is inside concerns an action taken twenty-two years ago.”

James’s face tightened.

“I gave my statement.”

“You gave part of it.”

Tristan retrieved the ring from the floor.

“This has nothing to do with the wedding.”

Maisie looked at him.

“There is no wedding.”

His jaw hardened.

“You are emotional.”

“No. I finally see you clearly.”

Tristan glanced around at the guests.

“You’ll regret humiliating me.”

James stepped between them.

Not threatening.

Protective.

Tristan laughed nervously.

“What are you going to do, Colonel? Order me arrested?”

James’s expression remained calm.

“No.”

The answer made Tristan more uncomfortable.

General Cole watched him.

“You should leave.”

Tristan’s father entered the aisle.

“My family paid for this event.”

Maisie removed her veil.

“My father paid for my entire education.”

She placed the veil on the altar.

“He worked every day so I could stand here.”

Then she looked at Tristan.

“You used the one thing he was ashamed of—being poor—to make yourself feel powerful.”

James whispered, “Maisie, you don’t need to defend me.”

“Yes, I do.”

She took his weathered hand.

“You spent my whole life defending me.”

General Cole opened the first clasp on the sealed folder.

James stopped him.

“Not here.”

The general studied his face.

“Sir, your daughter deserves to know why the Army owes you.”

James looked at Maisie.

Fear passed through his eyes.

Not fear of Tristan.

May you like

Fear of the past.

👉 James had hidden his rank for years—but what he had done as a colonel was the reason he never wore the uniform again.
