Chapter 13 - The Ceremony in Washington

The ceremony took place beneath a clear autumn sky in Washington, D.C.

James stood beside the surviving members of his evacuation unit.

Some used canes.

One sat in a wheelchair.

All wore their uniforms.

Maisie sat in the front row holding Aaron Cole’s letter.

General Nathan Cole read the corrected mission record.

He named every member of the crew.

Every medic.

Every pilot.

Every civilian rescued.

Then he described James’s final action.

After the damaged helicopter landed, James returned to the burning aircraft three times.

He carried out two wounded soldiers.

On the third trip, he brought Aaron Cole back.

James had never spoken about that.

Nathan’s voice trembled.

“My brother did not return home alive. But he did not die alone.”

James looked down.

General Cole continued.

“Colonel Evans carried both the burden and the blame for twenty-two years. Today, the record will carry the truth.”

The award was placed around James’s neck.

He did not smile immediately.

He looked toward his old unit.

Then toward Maisie.

She stood.

So did the rescued civilians seated behind her.

One by one, the entire audience rose.

The applause lasted several minutes.

James’s eyes filled.

He saluted his soldiers.

They saluted back.

Afterward, reporters surrounded him.

“What makes a hero, Colonel Evans?”

James considered the question.

“People use that word too easily.”

He looked toward his former crew.

“A hero is often someone who is afraid, tired, and uncertain—but refuses to leave another person behind.”

Maisie thought of the wedding.

Of him standing in the gardening vest.

Of herself finally refusing to leave him alone in humiliation.

A reporter asked why he became a gardener.

James smiled faintly.

“After years of seeing things destroyed, I wanted to help something grow.”

That answer appeared across the country.

But the moment Maisie remembered came later.

Away from cameras, James removed the medal and placed it in her hand.

“This belongs to everyone.”

She closed his fingers around it.

“Then start by carrying your part.”

👉 James finally accepted the honor—but Maisie still had to rebuild the future she had almost surrendered to Tristan.
