Chapter 4 - The Insult Before the Salute

The ceremony lasted twelve minutes before Tristan lost control.
It began when the officiant asked who presented Maisie in marriage.
James stepped forward.
“I do.”
Tristan’s father laughed under his breath.
James heard it.
So did Maisie.
The officiant continued.
But Tristan stared at the yellow vest.
His embarrassment grew with every photograph.
When James remained beside Maisie for the family blessing, Tristan whispered, “Move.”
James took one step back.
Maisie held his arm.
“He stays.”
Guests shifted uncomfortably.
Tristan forced a smile.
“This is our wedding, Maisie.”
“He is my father.”
“He looks like he came to repair the sprinklers.”
James released her arm.
“I’ll sit down.”
Maisie stopped him.
“No.”
Tristan saw several guests watching.
His need for control became rage.
He grabbed the microphone.
“What exactly are you trying to prove?”
Maisie stared at him.
“Put it down.”
He ignored her.
Then he turned toward James.
“You’ve spent your whole life depending on your daughter’s kindness.”
James’s face tightened.
Tristan continued.
“You had one job today. Show up looking respectable.”
“Enough,” Maisie said.
Tristan slammed the microphone base into the altar.
“Know your place.”
James nearly collapsed.
Maisie caught him.
Then she removed the ring.
The moment it struck the floor, the wedding ended.
Tristan stared at it.
“You’re choosing him over me?”
“I’m choosing the man who never made me ashamed to love him.”
The engines outside grew louder.
Every guest turned toward the entrance.
The commander entered in full dress uniform.
His aide carried a sealed folder.
He walked straight toward James.
Tristan tried to stop him.
“Excuse me. This is a private event.”
The commander did not even look at him.
James slowly raised his head.
Recognition flickered across his face.
“No,” he whispered.
The officer saluted.
The soldiers followed.
For the first time in decades, James stood exactly as he had been trained.
Straight.
Still.
Commanding.
Maisie stared at him.
“Dad… who is that?”
James’s eyes filled with tears.
But before he could answer, the commander spoke.
