Chapter 11 - Tristan’s Offer

Maisie met Tristan on the porch.
James and General Cole remained inside.
“You have five minutes,” she said.
Tristan looked exhausted.
His suit was wrinkled.
His confidence had become desperation.
“The federal investigators are freezing our accounts.”
Maisie said nothing.
“My father wants me to take responsibility for the foundation.”
“Did you know about the money?”
“I knew some expenses were moved.”
“That is not an answer.”
He opened the folder.
Inside were copied emails and bank transfers.
“My father controlled everything.”
“Then give it to investigators.”
“I need protection.”
“Get a lawyer.”
Tristan stepped closer.
“I can prove he knew about the Army file before our wedding.”
Maisie looked at him.
“You already knew.”
“I knew there was a rumor. I didn’t know it was true.”
“You still tried to drive my father out.”
“I was protecting us.”
“From what?”
“Scandal.”
Maisie stared at him.
“My father was the victim of the scandal.”
Tristan’s voice hardened.
“You do not understand what families like mine have to protect.”
She almost laughed.
“Money?”
“Legacy.”
“Your legacy was built on a lie.”
He lowered his voice.
“Help me make a statement. Say the wedding argument was emotional. Say I did not know who James was.”
“You did not respect him before you knew his rank.”
“That isn’t a crime.”
“No.”
Maisie looked him directly in the eyes.
“It is simply why I will never marry you.”
Tristan’s composure broke.
“You think anyone else will want you after this?”
The old Maisie might have flinched.
The woman standing on the porch did not.
“My father spent his life teaching me that dignity is not something another person gives me.”
She took the folder from his hand.
“I’ll give this to the investigators.”
He grabbed for it.
General Cole opened the door.
Tristan stopped.
Maisie stepped backward.
“You came here hoping to use me one last time.”
His face twisted.
“You owe me.”
“No.”
She closed the door.
“You owe my father an apology you are not brave enough to give.”
The evidence in Tristan’s folder led investigators directly to his father.
