Chapter 1 - The Camera Above the Ballroom Door

The oak menu board broke against my daughter’s head before I understood Preston was actually going to swing it.

Sophie dropped beside the aisle.

Wood scattered across the carpet.

For half a second, my new husband stood over my eight-year-old daughter holding what remained of the board.

“That’s exactly what a filthy thief deserves!”

I dropped to my knees.

“Sophie.”

Blood ran from a small cut near her temple. I folded a linen napkin and pressed it carefully against the wound.

“Mom…” She grabbed my sleeve. “I didn’t take it.”

“I know.”

Except I didn’t even know what she was accused of taking.

Twenty minutes earlier, Preston Bennett and I had exchanged vows in the garden of the Hawthorne House outside Charleston, South Carolina.

Now my daughter was bleeding at our wedding reception.

Preston’s mother, Margaret, walked toward us in her champagne dress.

She put one jeweled hand on her son’s shoulder.

“Enough making a scene. Call the cops.”

I looked up.

“What did you accuse her of stealing?”

Margaret answered.

“My bracelet.”

A diamond-and-sapphire bracelet worth nearly thirty thousand dollars.

Preston pointed toward Sophie’s small pink purse on a nearby chair.

“We found the empty jewelry pouch in her bag.”

I looked at Sophie.

She shook her head frantically.

“I didn’t put it there.”

Then I noticed something above the ballroom entrance.

A security camera.

A tiny status light blinked beside the lens.

My tears stopped.

I pointed at it.

“I demand to see the CCTV footage. Now.”

The security manager arrived carrying a tablet.

Guests crowded closer.

He opened the recording.

Before the first frame appeared, I looked at Preston.

His fists had gone loose.

The color had disappeared from his face.

He wasn’t looking at Sophie anymore.

He was staring at the tablet.

May you like

And that was when I understood something worse than the accusation.

My husband already knew what the camera was going to show.
