Chapter 14 - The Wedding Video We Finally Watched

I didn’t watch our wedding video for almost five months.

Then my attorney needed me to confirm several moments around the reception timeline.

I sat in her office.

There I was in the garden.

Light blue dress.

Flowers.

Sophie beside me.

Preston smiling as though we had a future.

Nothing in the image looked false.

That was the hardest part.

Some of it had been real.

I had loved him.

He probably had loved me in the limited way he understood love.

Then the footage moved into the reception.

Margaret stopped Sophie.

Took the purse.

Turned away.

Returned it.

Later, Margaret entered the bridal suite.

Then Preston.

Then came the ballroom.

The recording showed the accusation spreading.

Preston grabbing the oak menu board.

Sophie backing away.

Me turning toward them.

Then the strike.

I stopped the video.

My attorney waited.

“I’m done.”

I no longer needed to watch the rest.

Preston had one final opportunity through settlement negotiations to accept responsibility without making Sophie’s life part of a prolonged fight.

He took it.

Our attorneys reached agreements concerning property and financial separation subject to the required legal process.

My townhouse remained mine.

Sophie’s custodial assets remained protected.

Preston assumed responsibility for his own premarital debts.

Nothing about the outcome made me richer.

It simply prevented his desperation from becoming my daughter’s burden.

Before the final paperwork moved forward, Preston sent one letter.

Not to Sophie.

To me.

He wrote:

I believed being your husband meant I should come before everyone except you. I understand now that asking a mother to rank her child beneath a marriage was the first thing I should have recognized as wrong.

I read it once.

May you like

Then put it away.

Understanding something after destroying it does not automatically earn another chance.
