Chapter 2 - The Missing Bracelet

Sophie needed medical attention before I needed answers.

I made that clear.

A staff member trained in first aid checked the wound while the hotel contacted emergency medical services. The cut looked frightening because of the blood, but Sophie remained alert and responsive.

Preston tried to approach.

I stepped between them.

“Don’t.”

“Claire, she stole from my mother.”

“You just hit my child with a piece of wood.”

“She was running.”

“She was standing still.”

Margaret interrupted.

“My bracelet disappeared from the bridal suite. Then its pouch appeared in Sophie’s purse. What conclusion would you like us to reach?”

“A conclusion that doesn’t involve assaulting an eight-year-old.”

The security manager, David Lawson, asked us to move into a private office while staff preserved the recording.

I asked whether the camera covered the hallway outside the bridal suite.

“Yes.”

“Does it cover the ballroom entrance?”

“Yes.”

“Can footage be deleted?”

“Not from this tablet.”

Preston immediately said, “Nobody’s deleting anything.”

Too quickly.

Sophie was taken to an urgent-care facility with me while the venue preserved the video and documented the incident.

The wedding reception effectively ended.

I was still wearing my light blue wedding dress when the doctor closed Sophie’s cut with medical adhesive and confirmed she had no signs requiring hospital admission, though I was given strict instructions about what symptoms to watch for.

On the drive back to my apartment, Sophie asked one question.

“Are we still married to him?”

We.

That word hurt.

Legally, I had married Preston that afternoon.

Emotionally, something had ended before dinner.

“I don’t know what happens next.”

Sophie stared through the window.

Then she said, “Grandma Margaret asked to hold my purse before the ceremony.”

I looked over.

“When?”

“When you were taking pictures.”

“Why?”

“She said my strap looked twisted.”

A small detail.

Ordinary enough that Sophie hadn’t mentioned it earlier.

May you like

Except Margaret had been the person who supposedly discovered the empty jewelry pouch inside that same purse.

And suddenly Preston wasn’t the only person whose reaction to the security footage mattered.
