Chapter 3 - What the First Recording Showed
David sent the preserved footage to investigators and, with proper authorization, allowed my attorney to obtain access to relevant portions later.
The first useful sequence did not show Sophie stealing anything.
It showed Margaret.
At 4:17 p.m., Sophie walked toward the ballroom with two flower girls.
Margaret stopped her.
They spoke briefly.
Then Sophie handed Margaret her pink purse.
Margaret turned her body away from the camera.
Her hands disappeared behind the purse for approximately eight seconds.
Then she returned it.
That proved opportunity.
It did not prove she planted anything.
The second sequence was worse.
At 5:41 p.m., Margaret entered the bridal suite wearing the bracelet.
At 5:48, she left without it.
At 5:53, Preston entered the suite alone.
He remained inside for four minutes.
When he emerged, he looked directly toward the hallway camera.
Then he walked away.
I watched that moment three times.
Preston knew the camera existed.
That explained his face when I demanded the recording.
But it didn’t tell me what he had done inside.
The bracelet itself remained missing.
My attorney warned me not to build a complete theory from incomplete footage.
So I focused on what I could prove.
Sophie had not entered the bridal suite during the relevant period.
The pouch in her purse could not establish that she took the bracelet.
And Preston had assaulted her based on an accusation unsupported by the available evidence.
I packed his belongings from my apartment.
Not because a lawyer told me to.
Because Sophie refused to walk past the guest bedroom while his suitcase was inside.
Preston called fourteen times.
I answered once.
“I want to explain.”
“Then explain why you looked scared of the camera.”
Silence.
“Claire—”
“Why?”
“I thought it would make everything look worse.”
“What does that mean?”
Another pause.
Then he said something I hadn’t expected.
“My mother wasn’t supposed to involve Sophie.”
I stopped breathing for a second.

Preston hung up.
