Chapter 2 - The Ticket In My Hand

I sat inside my parked car and stared at the lottery ticket.
For years, Spencer had been my reason to keep fighting.
After his father died, I worked extra shifts.
I skipped vacations.
I sold things I loved.
All because I wanted my son to have an easier life.
Now I wondered if he had ever seen my sacrifices.
Or only the money attached to them.
My phone rested beside the ticket.
I almost called him.
Almost asked why.
But then I imagined his face.
The same confident smile.
The same excuses.
I unlocked my phone instead.
That was when a message appeared from an unknown number.
I stared at the screen.
The message was short.
“Your son is not the only person hiding something.”
My breathing slowed.
A second message appeared.
“Do not give him the ticket.”
My hand froze.
Someone knew about the lottery ticket.
Someone had been watching.
I looked toward the hospital entrance.
People walked in and out.
Doctors.
Visitors.
Families.

But suddenly every person looked like a stranger.
