Chapter 3 - The Stranger Who Knew

I returned to the hospital hallway but did not enter Spencer’s room.
Instead, I sat near the waiting area.
I needed answers.
The nurse passed by again.
“Mrs. Riley, are you okay?”
I smiled.
A fake smile.
“I’m fine.”
But she looked at me carefully.
Then she lowered her voice.
“Your son has had a lot of visitors today.”
That surprised me.
“Visitors?”
She nodded.
“A woman came earlier.”
“What woman?”
The nurse hesitated.
“She said she was a family friend.”
My stomach tightened.
Spencer had told me nobody knew about his condition.
Nobody.
I looked toward his door.
Through the glass, I saw him sitting comfortably.
Not weak.
Not scared.
Talking on his phone again.
Then he looked toward the hallway.
I moved away before he saw me.
For the first time in my life…
May you like
I was afraid of my own son.
