I gripped the phone tighter.
“Who are you?”
The woman was silent.
Then:
“Someone who made the same mistake you did.”
“What mistake?”
“Believing Spencer loved you more than what you could give him.”
The words hurt because part of me already knew.
The woman explained she had been involved in Spencer’s life recently.
Not as a friend.
As someone who discovered his lies.
“He told me he was sick because he needed access to money.”
My eyes closed.
“How long?”
“Months.”
I looked through the hospital window.
Spencer sat in his bed.
Waiting for me.
Waiting for money.
The woman said one final thing.
“He doesn’t know what you found.”
I whispered:
“What bigger secret?”
