Chapter 5 - The Illness That Didn’t Add Up

I began noticing things.

Small things.

The things a mother usually ignores because love makes excuses.

Spencer’s medicine schedule.

The visitors.

The way nurses looked uncomfortable around him.

The way he always became weaker when I arrived.

But stronger when someone mentioned money.

I asked the nurse a simple question.

“Is my son getting worse?”

She looked surprised.

“Actually, his condition has been stable.”

Stable.

That word stayed with me.

Because Spencer had spent days making me believe every hour was precious.

I returned to my car.

I opened the lottery ticket envelope.

Then I stopped.

Something was folded behind it.

A small piece of paper I had never seen before.

My hands trembled as I opened it.

One sentence was written.
