I waited until evening before I returned to Spencer’s room.
This time, I knocked.
His expression changed instantly.

“Mom.”
He opened his arms.
I stood still.
“How are you feeling?”

Then his phone buzzed.
He looked at the screen.

Just for a second.
But I saw it.
“What is it?”
“Nothing.”
A lie.
I had spent sixty years learning the difference.
He turned the phone away.
