Chapter 16 - I STOPPED HIDING

Vanessa expected shame to make me negotiate.

Instead, I called a press conference.

Rebecca hated the timing.

Maya understood it immediately.

“If you disclose the signatures yourself, Vanessa loses their surprise value.”

“That isn’t why.”

They both looked at me.

“I’m tired of pretending my only mistake was trusting the wrong person.”

The conference took place outside the guesthouse, far from Ethan.

I did not show photographs of him.

I did not play the recorder.

I did not accuse anyone of crimes investigators had not charged.

I said three things.

“My son is alive and receiving care.”

“I signed financial authorizations I failed to review adequately.”

“And I will cooperate with every investigation into my company, my foundation, and my own conduct.”

Reporters shouted.

“Did your wife abduct Ethan?”

“Were you involved in foundation fraud?”

“Are you mentally competent to run Sterling Holdings?”

I answered only what I could support.

“I did not knowingly authorize fraudulent transfers.”

“Law enforcement is investigating Ethan’s confinement.”

“I am stepping away from executive duties voluntarily until the company’s independent committee completes its review.”

Rebecca looked at me when I finished.

“You just gave up the CEO fight.”

“Temporarily.”

“Vanessa wanted you out.”

“She wanted me out while she controlled what replaced me.”

That was the difference.

I recommended the board appoint independent director Susan Keller as interim CEO.

Not me.

Not Vanessa.

Not Adrian.

Within six hours, three directors who had supported Vanessa’s emergency vote changed sides after learning about the asset freeze and criminal investigation.

Susan was appointed.

Vanessa lost operational control.

For the first time, I had counterattacked without trying to reclaim power for myself.

It worked.

Then it cost me.

Sterling Holdings shares dropped seventeen percent when the fraud investigation became public.

Employees called frightened about pensions and layoffs.

Foundation partners suspended programs.

My decisions had consequences beyond my family.

Maya began tracing every questionable transfer.

I joined the audit not as CEO but as a witness.

That evening, Hannah visited the guesthouse under the approved supervision plan.

Ethan ran to her.

She dropped to her knees.

He pressed his face into her shoulder.

I watched from the doorway.

“You should have been the one he ran to first,” Hannah said quietly later.

The sentence could have been cruel.

It was not.

“I know.”

She looked surprised.

“I kept telling myself work was how I protected him.”

“And now?”

“Now I think protection requires being present enough to know what he’s afraid of.”

Hannah nodded.

No forgiveness speech.

No reassurance.

Just truth.

Then Rebecca called.

Vanessa’s petition against Hannah was collapsing.

Forensics had examined the threatening messages supposedly sent from Hannah’s phone.

The messages were created after Vanessa confiscated staff phones.

The device had connected to the mansion’s private Wi-Fi using an administrator network.

Hannah did not know the password.

Vanessa did.

The evidence meant to frame Hannah now documented access from inside Vanessa’s controlled system.

But investigators discovered something else in the phone backup.

A photograph Hannah had taken three weeks earlier.

Ethan was standing beside the west ballroom wall.

Behind him, partly visible through an unfinished contractor opening, was Vanessa.

And she was handing Adrian the black prescription bottle later found inside the compartment.

The wall had been part of their planning before I ever left for London.

📖 Hannah’s old photograph cleared much of the suspicion against her while proving Vanessa and Adrian had used the hidden passage weeks before Ethan disappeared. 👇
