Chapter 17 - VANESSA’S VERSION
Vanessa finally spoke publicly.
She chose television.
She sat beneath soft studio lights in a cream suit, no diamonds, no wine-red gown, looking nothing like the woman who screamed for Hannah to close the wall.
“I was terrified of my husband,” she told the interviewer.
I watched only because Rebecca insisted.
Vanessa said I worked constantly.
That part was true.
She said our marriage had become controlling.
That was harder to dismiss because I had controlled plenty of things through money and habit without recognizing them as control.
Then she lied.
She claimed Ethan had been hidden in the service compartment during a “temporary safety emergency” because she believed I was returning home unstable.
She claimed Hart sedated him without her authorization.
She claimed Adrian handled corporate matters she did not understand.
She claimed the phrase “he isn’t allowed to be here” meant Ethan was not supposed to be near dangerous broken plaster.
Rebecca paused the video.
“Notice what she’s doing?”
“Separating herself from every decision.”
“Exactly.”
Vanessa continued.
She admitted telling me Ethan was “gone,” but said she meant he was gone from the property.
That almost made me throw the remote.
Then the interviewer asked about the recorder.
Vanessa’s lawyer had clearly prepared her.
“I have not heard any authenticated recording proving I harmed my child.”
Technically careful.
Emotionally empty.
Then she attacked Hannah.
“She had an inappropriate attachment to my son.”
Hannah was in the kitchen.
She heard it.
Her face did not move.
“Turn it off,” I said.
“No.”
“Hannah.”
“I want to hear what she’s willing to say.”
The interview ended with Vanessa crying.
Real tears.
That was what made her dangerous.
Some part of her genuinely believed she had been cornered into everything she did.
She could feel sorry for herself without feeling sorry for Ethan.
The next morning, her version suffered another factual blow.
Bellweather Restoration produced internal messages from the renovation six months earlier.
Vanessa personally requested that a narrow service alcove behind the west ballroom wall remain accessible through a removable panel.
The contractor warned it was not intended for occupancy.
She replied:
Understood. It is for storage only.
Weeks later, Adrian requested ventilation be added to the same space.
There was no innocent reason to ventilate a sealed storage void.
The setup had been gradual.
The plan did not begin when my audit was scheduled.
The physical capability began months earlier.
Maya then found the financial timing.
The first missing foundation transfer occurred nine months ago.
Vanessa had begun stealing before the wall renovation.
The wall was not built specifically for Ethan at first.
It was built as a concealed place to store records and devices related to Northstar.
Then, when the audit threatened her, she repurposed it.
That distinction mattered.
It explained why no contractor knowingly built a prison.
Vanessa turned an old secret into a new one.
At noon, prosecutors filed charges against Dr. Hart related to unlawful medication, falsification of records, and child endangerment.
Adrian faced fraud and conspiracy counts tied to the financial scheme.
Vanessa was not arrested yet.
Investigators were still building the case against the person who coordinated both halves.
She used that delay as proof of innocence.
Then Detective Ortiz called me.
“We recovered another section of the recorder.”
“What does it say?”
“It doesn’t add a new mystery.”
Her voice softened.
“It adds intent.”
Vanessa could be heard telling Adrian:
“If Richard ever learns what we took, Ethan is the only thing he loves more than that company.”
I stopped breathing for a second.
My son had not been collateral by accident.
