Chapter 7 - HANNAH’S WARNING

Hannah had tried to warn someone before the wall came down.
It just had not been me.
We sat in a family waiting room while Ethan slept again.
“I called Mr. Barrett,” she said.
“When?”
“Yesterday afternoon.”
“Why not me?”
Her face tightened.
“Because Mrs. Sterling took my phone.”
I stared at her.
“She did what?”
“She said staff weren’t allowed personal phones during the gala setup. She collected everyone’s at the service entrance.”
That sounded exactly like Vanessa.
Hannah continued.
“I used the pantry landline. I remembered Mr. Barrett’s office number from the emergency contact sheet.”
“What did you tell him?”
“That I had seen Dr. Hart carrying Ethan toward the west service corridor after Mrs. Sterling told the household Ethan had been taken to the hospital.”
“And Miles?”
“He told me not to accuse anyone. He said he would come personally.”
That explained why he arrived early.
“What happened next?”
“Vanessa found me near the west hallway.”
Hannah rubbed her wrist unconsciously.
“She asked what I was doing. I told her I heard something behind the wall.”
“And?”
“She fired me.”
I looked at her uniform.
“Then why were you still there?”
“For Ethan.”
Simple.
No speech.
No performance.
“For ten minutes I stood outside by the staff entrance,” she said. “Then the catering supervisor came out screaming because three servers had walked off. I told her Vanessa had fired me. She said Vanessa had no time to replace anyone and told me to get back inside.”
A tiny, almost disbelieving smile touched Hannah’s mouth.
“Mrs. Sterling was too busy preparing the ballroom to notice I returned.”
“So you kept looking.”
“I knew there used to be an old dumbwaiter passage behind that wall. The mansion renovation covered most of it. Ethan and I played near there months ago while contractors were working.”
That was the first real explanation for why she ran directly to the wall after hearing him.
She knew a void existed behind it.
“Why did Ethan have the recorder?”
Hannah lowered her eyes.
“It was mine.”
That surprised me.
“I use it for inventory notes. Ethan loves buttons. Last week he kept taking it from my apron.”
She swallowed.
“Two days ago he got frightened when Vanessa and Dr. Hart argued upstairs. I gave it to him and told him if any grown-up scared him, he could press the red button and tell me what happened.”
“You put it in his jacket?”
“Yes.”
The recorder was not a miraculous object that appeared inside the wall.
It was there because Hannah had already noticed my son was afraid.
Another thing I had missed.
“Why didn’t you tell me Vanessa frightened him?”
“I tried twice.”
I looked up.
She did not soften it.
“Your office told me you were unavailable.”
My office.
Adrian controlled executive scheduling while I traveled.
I felt another part of the structure click into place.
They had not merely hidden Ethan.
They had controlled access to me before they hid him.
Rebecca entered with her phone in hand.
“The court froze the Northstar closing for forty-eight hours.”
My first small victory.
Then she added the cost.
“Vanessa filed a petition claiming Hannah abducted Ethan and concealed him in the wall to extort your family.”
Hannah went white.
Vanessa was no longer defending herself.

She was choosing who to sacrifice first.
📖 We stopped the sale for forty-eight hours, but Vanessa answered by making Hannah the accused—and proving the next battle would be fought over credibility, not only evidence. 👇
