Chapter 9 - VANESSA’S COUNTERATTACK

Vanessa did not wait for us to investigate Bellweather Restoration.
She attacked before noon.
A reporter called Rebecca asking whether I had suffered “a psychiatric collapse following the presumed death of my child.”
Then another asked whether Sterling Holdings had removed me because of “erratic behavior and substance abuse.”
I had no substance-abuse history.
Facts were irrelevant to the first wave.
By one o’clock, a twenty-second video appeared online.
It showed me in the ballroom holding Ethan and roaring at Vanessa.
The beginning—Hannah breaking the wall—was removed.
The recorder was removed.
Vanessa screaming to close the wall was removed.
All anyone saw was a billionaire executive clutching a crying toddler while threatening his wife.
The caption claimed Vanessa had “rescued Ethan from an unstable domestic situation.”
I stared at the screen.
“She filmed this herself?”
Rebecca shook her head.
“Guest video.”
“Who gave it to the press?”
“We don’t know yet.”
I called the company’s communications director.
She did not answer.
Five minutes later, her deputy did.
“Mr. Sterling, I’ve been instructed not to speak on behalf of the company without Mrs. Sterling’s authorization.”
The proxy was doing more damage by the hour.
Vanessa could not move the frozen subsidiaries.
But she could use the company I built to define me publicly.
Then Child Protective Services arrived.
Not to seize Ethan.
Not to declare anyone guilty.
To establish where he could safely stay while law enforcement investigated allegations against both parents and Hannah.
The caseworker, Marissa Boyd, asked questions I hated because they were necessary.
Had I left Ethan in Vanessa’s exclusive care while traveling?
Yes.
Had I personally verified his supposed death before signing corporate documents?
No.
Had I threatened Vanessa during the ballroom confrontation?
I had shouted.
Had I physically restrained her?
I caught her wrist when she lunged at the recorder.
Every answer that sounded terrible was still true.
Vanessa’s strategy became clear.
She could not erase the wall.
So she would make me look reckless enough that the wall became one piece of a chaotic marriage.
Marissa proposed Ethan remain at the hospital until discharge planning was complete, then stay temporarily with a neutral caregiver approved by both CPS and investigators.
My first instinct was refusal.
“He stays with me.”
Rebecca touched my arm.
“Richard.”
I looked at Ethan coloring beside Hannah.
Protecting him was not the same as possessing him.
“What do you need from me?” I asked Marissa.
“Cooperation.”
“Then you have it.”
Vanessa expected me to fight the process and prove her story for her.
I would not.
That afternoon, Bellweather’s owner returned Detective Ortiz’s call.
He confirmed one of his vans had been dispatched to my mansion.
The order was unusual.
Two workers had been told to wait at the service gate until someone named “A. Cole” called them inside.
Their written work order said:
REMOVE TEMPORARY PARTITION AND TRANSPORT STORED MATERIAL.
No mention of a child.
No mention of Ethan.
But the order had been placed four days earlier.
Four days before I signed anything.
The scheme had a schedule.
And Adrian had been assigned to move my son after Vanessa obtained control.
Then Rebecca’s phone buzzed.
She looked at me.
“The board just suspended you as CEO.”
May you like
Vanessa had turned my own company against me.
📖 Vanessa had taken my public reputation and my executive seat in a single afternoon, forcing me to choose whether saving the company mattered more than protecting Ethan. 👇
