Chapter 10 - Vale Had Hidden One More Survivor

The breakthrough came from an omission.

Not evidence.

A name.

Caleb was reviewing old personnel lists when he noticed the final mission manifest contained five people.

My memory contained six.

Me.

Mason.

Two support specialists.

One local liaison.

And Captain Laura Brennan.

Laura wasn’t on the archived manifest.

I called Vale immediately.

“Why is Brennan missing?”

Silence.

“Adrian.”

“She was removed after the incident.”

“From the record?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“She entered protected status.”

My anger came back instantly.

“You hid another survivor.”

“I protected another survivor.”

“From me?”

“From everyone.”

Laura had been badly injured but survived.

Like me, she received a new identity.

Unlike me, she had never been officially listed among the dead because her presence on the mission had itself been unofficial.

Three clues shifted at once.

Someone knew private Ranger commands.

Someone possessed Mason’s belongings.

Someone knew enough operational history to forge documents but made deliberate-looking mistakes.

Laura had access to all of it.

Then Vale told me the part he had concealed.

Before disappearing, Laura accused Mason of betrayal.

Mason accused Laura.

No evidence conclusively resolved it.

Vale separated us because he believed one survivor might eventually target the other.

“Where is she?”

“I don’t know anymore.”

“You lost her?”

“She severed contact eighteen months ago.”

That timeline matched the first unauthorized access to an old archive.

Not the recent one.

An older intrusion nobody had connected.

Caleb leaned forward.

“Could Laura have trained with Ranger?”

“Yes.”

“Would he know her scent?”

“Yes.”

That gave us a test.

But there was no Laura to test.

Then the photograph left at the diner was reexamined.

The reflection in the glass showed part of the photographer.

Small detail.

Long dark coat.

A hand holding the camera.

Female.

Not proof.

But enough to change assumptions.

For weeks, we had been imagining Mason.

Maybe that was exactly what Laura wanted.

The dead man made perfect camouflage.

Then Vale received a direct message through an obsolete emergency channel.

Only three people knew the code.

Vale.

Me.

Laura.

The message contained four words.

Evelyn deserves the truth.

Then coordinates.

Different location.

This time, I recognized it.

A lakeside cabin where Laura and I had once trained before deployment.

She wasn’t trying to lure the military.

She was asking for me.
