Chapter 13 - We Built the Case Without Another Trap

Nobody went rogue.

That became my condition.

No secret break-in.

No heroic midnight raid.

No using Ranger to frighten somebody into confessing.

Vale worked through proper investigative channels.

Contractor records were preserved.

Archived systems were located.

Forensic specialists examined old hardware.

Laura gave sworn statements.

So did I.

Caleb documented Ranger’s recognition behavior only as contextual information, not proof of guilt.

That distinction mattered.

Dogs can support investigations.

They do not decide them.

Then the independent confirmation appeared.

An archived authentication log from a maintenance server.

Peter Vaughn’s contractor credential accessed Mason’s communications module before the mission.

Vaughn had denied ever handling the equipment.

That lie opened the door.

Additional financial and communication records followed.

The pattern showed unauthorized data transfers and suspicious post-incident cleanup activity.

No single perfect smoking gun.

A chain.

A real case.

Vale finally admitted why he had sent Ranger.

He suspected Laura was active again.

He believed Ranger might distinguish between someone who merely possessed old files and someone connected physically to the original team.

He did not know I would be the first person Ranger found.

“You gambled with my life.”

“Yes.”

“Would you do it again?”

Vale took too long.

“That’s why I don’t trust you anymore.”

He accepted that.

Good.

Laura faced consequences too.

Her unauthorized intrusions into archived systems could not simply disappear because her underlying suspicion was correct.

She had endangered protected identities.

Mine included.

She knew that.

“I thought being right would make the methods matter less.”

“It doesn’t.”

“I know.”

That phrase had become common among all of us.

I know.

Usually spoken after damage.

Then the formal investigative team asked whether I was willing to restore my real identity for sealed testimony.

Not public exposure.

Not immediately.

But Evelyn Hart would legally need to exist again in certain proceedings.

For three years, Hannah Reed had been my shelter.

Now I had to decide whether keeping her meant leaving Mason’s truth incomplete.
