Chapter 11 - Laura Was Alive Too

We did not walk blindly into the cabin.

Surveillance went first.

Thermal.

Perimeter.

No obvious secondary threat.

One person inside.

Female.

Caleb stayed with the outer team.

Ranger remained leashed.

I entered with authorization and support nearby.

Laura Brennan was sitting at a wooden table.

Older.

Thinner.

A scar across the left side of her neck.

But alive.

She looked at me and smiled without warmth.

“Evelyn.”

I stayed standing.

“Laura.”

“You kept the hair.”

“You kept the theatrics.”

That almost made her laugh.

Almost.

Then Ranger entered behind Caleb.

The dog froze.

Exactly like the diner.

Laura’s eyes filled.

“Hey, Ranger.”

She gave no command.

Good.

Ranger approached cautiously.

Sniffed.

Then leaned toward her hand.

Recognition.

Laura had not faked Mason’s items alone.

She possessed genuine team property.

“Where did you get his tag?”

“From Mason.”

My heart tightened.

“When?”

“Three days after the attack.”

Caleb stared.

“You saw him alive?”

“Yes.”

That was the major twist.

Mason survived the initial explosion.

Laura found him.

He was injured.

Terrified.

And convinced someone on our own side had triggered the transmission through his equipment.

“Why didn’t he come back?”

“Because the people searching for us included the person who compromised the operation.”

“Who?”

Laura looked at Vale through the secure audio link.

Then back at me.

“Not Adrian.”

Vale exhaled.

Laura continued.

Mason believed the betrayal came from a contractor intelligence liaison named Peter Vaughn.

A man attached indirectly to the mission.

Vaughn had access to Mason’s equipment before deployment.

He also controlled part of the recovery effort afterward.

That explained how evidence associated with Mason became contaminated.

“What happened to Mason?”

Laura’s expression changed.

“He died two days later.”

No conspiracy.

No secret life.

No dramatic return.

He died from injuries while Laura was trying to move him to safety.

She buried him temporarily and later provided coordinates through a channel she believed was secure.

Nobody came.

Because Vaughn intercepted it.

Laura spent years trying to prove that.

Then she made her mistake.

She began using Mason’s identity digitally to flush Vaughn out.

She wanted him to react.

He did.

And in doing so, she led him close enough to discover me.

Laura hadn’t come to expose me.

She had accidentally brought the danger back.
